Flick picks: Film Noir, Vancouver Queer Film Festival
Another wave of film festivals are headed our way.
Tonight, the annual Film Noir series steams up the screens at the Pacific Cinémathèque (1131 Howe Street) for 22 nights of moral corruption, sexual politics, and delicious darkness.
Among the 19 selections, there are three that are new 35 mm prints (The Killers, Nightmare Alley, Alias Nick Beal), and one is a 35 mm restoration in—believe it or not—colour.
Things kick off in style with Cinébar. A complimentary wine tasting of Hob Nob Pinot Noir will be paired with tonight's screening of The Killers, starring Burt Lancaster and Ava Gardener.

In the fading glow of the Pride Parade comes the countdown to the 21st annual Vancouver Queer Film Festival.
The party gets started on August 13 with the cross-cultural romance I Can't Think Straight, about an Indian girl (Sheetal Sheth) and a Jordanian gal (Canadian actor Lisa Ray of Water) who fall for one another.
With 71 films to choose from, not to mention numerous parties, queer cinephiles have their work cut out for them.
Tickets are now available online or at Little Sister's bookstore (1238 Davie Street).
Upcoming festivals to keep a look out for are two Asian series at Vancity Theatre (1181 Seymour Street): TaiwanFest Cinema (August 27 to 29) and the Vancouver Singapore Film Festival (September 5 and 6).
More details on those to come in forthcoming blog entries.
