Foursquare is coming to Vancouver on Wednesday (September 9).
The location-based social-networking site, mobile application, and game is currently available in 21 U.S. cities, including Seattle and Portland, and Amsterdam.
The help page on the Foursquare site describes the service as “50% friend-finder, 30% social cityguide, 20% nightlife game”.
Users can check-in at restaurants and other locations, score points for those check-ins, and earn badges for certain activities.
Both an iPhone app and an Android app are available.
According to today’s press release from Vancouver-based 6S Marketing, which is helping out with the launch, Foursquare’s local premiere will involve a “first-time crowdsourcing experiment”.
“Instead of Foursquare seeding Vancouver with venues, we’ll let the users take a stab at providing content,” Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley said in the release. “If we can successfully crowdsource a city launch like this, we think that the concept has global potential and we’ll definitely try it in other cities.”
6S will host a launch event at V at Earls Yaletown (1095 Mainland Street) on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m.
