Flick picks: Vancouver Latin American Film Festival workshops, BOLD lesbian film fest

You probably already know that the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival has kicked off its Latin cinema showcase that runs until September 20.

There are plenty of films to sift through (29 features, in fact, in addition to shorts).

But for those who want to learn more about filmmaking, don't forget that there are also the seminars with industry professionals. However, advance registration is required and tickets aren't available at the door. So now's your last chance to register if you were considering attending Advancing the Art and Craft of Filmmaking workshop series that will be held tomorrow (September 12) and Sunday (September 13).

Content will cover makeup and beauty lighting session, the latest in high-definition technology, legal issues (presented by Karyn Edwards of Brightlight Pictures), and master lighting workshops with cinematographers including the Oscar-nominated Jack Green (Unforgiven) and Roberto Schaefer (The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace).

Meanwhile, the inaugural BOLD (Bold, Old(er), Lesbians & Dykes) Film Festival, held during the BOLD conference (September 10 to 13), is set to hit the screen at the Rio Theatre (1660 East Broadway) on Sunday (September 13).

Films will include five shorts; Gerry Rogers' Ferron: A Girl on a Road, a biopic feature about 60-year-old singer Ferron as she hits the stage after being away for more than a decade; and the documentary Edie and Thea, A Very Long Engagement, about a love story set against the Stonewall Riots and the Marrige Equality Movement.
