Your horoscope for October 1 to 8, 2009

Recently, a distraught friend phoned me. “Should I sell my house and move to Saskatchewan or maybe even further”¦maybe Manitoba?” he asked.

“Whatever for?” I asked.

“You mean you haven’t heard? In 2012, the West Coast will probably flood or sink,” he said.

Although agitated, my friend is not paranoid. He has simply surfed the Internet and read the mystical conjectures of popular culture. It is, unfortunately, a bit frightening: a rare and powerful cosmic event will take place in the last days of 2012. On the morning of December 21, 2012, the sun will rise in direct alignment with the centre of the galaxy. At the exact same time, Earth will traverse the galactic plane and rest gingerly on its milky surface.

This event occurs once every 26,500 years and, of course, has drawn much speculation. The Mayans described the end of time and “a great harvesting of souls”. Edgar Cayce claimed that a shift in the magnetic poles would trigger unimaginable destruction. And Nostradamus, the infamous 16th-century prophet, envisioned tremendous flooding and many lost continents.

No cheerful story, this, to be sure. And you’ll no doubt be hearing many more such predictions as the time draws closer.

My thoughts? I suspect we will experience solar flares, disrupted electrical systems, earthquakes, and some flooding, but thankfully no catastrophic destruction. Not even in Saskatchewan.
