Emily Carr University students take art to commuters

Krista Jahnke's Same Soup Different Flavour: 100 Pairs of Converse Shoes is just one of the pieces that will be on display at downtown SkyTrain stations.

A new pilot project launched September 30 will put the work of emerging artists in front of the masses.

Between Spaces, a public art collaboration between the BC Rapid Transit Company Ltd and Emily Carr University of Art + Design, has displayed pieces by the art school's 2009 grad class at both the Waterfront and Burrard SkyTrain stations downtown.

The project is meant to expose new artists to huge numbers of commuters, including many who might not ever step into a gallery.

A side benefit could be the reduction of graffiti.

The artworks will be on exhibit for one year, with plans for a possible one-year extension.

The university and transit are searching for third-party funding to expand the program into more stations.
