Homewares go One of a Kind at annual show

Several up-and-coming artists at this week’s One of a Kind Show and Sale (October 8 to 11 at the Vancouver Convention Centre) prove that handcrafting can look cutting-edge contemporary. Here are some of the hipper booths design-philes will want to check out.

Mizzonk
Maple Ridge’s Roger Chen and Wan-Yi Lin balance playfulness and almost monastic purity in their woodworking and ceramics. Check out American black walnut interlocking coasters that come apart to become puzzle blocks; small, spherical black- or white-glazed stoneware pen holders; and squiggly, stackable stoneware ceramic sculptures that double as napkin holders.

Lilach Lotan
The Jerusalem-raised Nanaimo ceramist transforms unglazed, translucent porcelain into ethereal, ultracontemporary light fixtures: think coral-reef-shaped sconces, glowing “bubble” forms, and petalled flowers that sit on tables. Look closely and you’ll see they’re all hand-thrown.

Cici Art Factory
Forget cartoon characters: Vancouver mother and then–Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design grad Liz Clay gives kids’ rooms an artful touch with her bright, whimsical, thickly painted works. The images look straight out of a child’s imagination—a dream world of pet dinosaurs, hot-air-balloon rides, and little girls with bird’s nests in their hair.
