Metric at the Orpheum

For some reason, a bunch of people around here got their shit in a knot when Metric headlined over Sonic Youth at Virgin Fest this summer. What’s the prob? Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore aren’t likely to give a bent tuning peg where and when they play, and it’s Metric—not Sonic Youth—that brought a little dignity to this country after years of being the go-to punch line on South Park. Give it up, people. Christ, do you even remember what it was like around here before Metric? That’s right, it was like living on the ice planet Hoth with nothing but Len, Edwin, and the Tea Party for distraction. And just when you were at the point of driving a pencil into your own neck in a last-ditch attempt to stave off the boredom, boom! It’s all “Combat Baby”, “Dead Disco”, “Monster Hospital”, stealth-rigged pop genius, ’80s revivalism (the good kind!), and Emily Haines’s perfect legs sticking out of a pair of silver short-shorts. On top of that, she uses phrases like “ravenous consumption drone” in her interviews. In other words, Emily Haines is the perfect woman in the perfect band. Give them the fucking Order of Canada or, failing that, see Metric headline at the Orpheum on Tuesday (November 3).
