Whistler Film Festival 2009: Borsos Award nominees announced

Films from B.C., Ontario, and Quebec will compete for the $15,000 Borsos Award for Best New Canadian Feature Film award at the ninth annual Whistler Film Festival (December 3 to 6).

The debut feature by Canadian media personality  Sook-Yin Lee (who hails from Vancouver) is in the running. (Her film also opened the Toronto International Film Festival's Canada First! program.)

The nominees are:
Corey Adams and Alex Craig’s Machotaildrop (B.C.)
Sook-Yin Lee’s Year of the Carnivore (B.C./ON)
Peter StebbingsDefendor (ON)
Ryan Arnold’s Skid Love (ON)
Alexandre Franchi’s The Wild Hunt (QC)
Sophie Deraspe’s Les Signes Vitaux (Vital Signs) (QC)

The award will be chosen by a jury comprised of director/producer Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters, I Love You, Man), producer Niv Fichman (The Red Violin, Passchendaele), and Jessica Paré (Lost and Delirious).

Reitman will be the focus of a special tribute on December 4.

The Borsos Award is named after Canadian filmmaker Phillip Borsos (The Grey Fox, Bethune). To be eligible for the award, all films must be Canadian dramatic features and B.C. premieres at the festival.
