The Morrissey is a star magnet
Nardwuar the Human Serviette and the Evaporators take the stage for a free show at the Morrissey next Thursday (November 19). The Granville Street bar has been a popular hangout for travelling bands rooming at next door’s Ramada Inn. “I’ve met a lot of legends,” managing partner Paul Douglas told the Straight. “So many bands,” he said. “Band of Skulls lived at the Morrissey for three days recently. Band of Horses were here for a whole weekend.” Off the top of his head, Douglas recalled nights spent with Slayer, the Raveonettes, the Bravery, and R.E.M.
“Roger Waters tried to come in, but the doorman didn’t know who he was,” he continued. “I ran around the block looking for him but he was gone, like a ghost.” Cheap Trick’s Robin Zander apparently made a good impression. “He showed up with a 20-year-old girl, but then he started hitting on my girlfriend,” Douglas said. The bar recently commemorated a decade of business with renovations designed by Reisa Pollard from Beyond Beige. “It’s very baroque,” Douglas said. “My friend says the chandelier in the back looks like it’s from The Shining.”
