Delicious donburi remixed at Donburi-ya

It was inevitable that sushi’s casual cousin, donburi, would get remixed. At the shockingly efficient Donburi-ya (5–1329 Robson Street), you can grab a jaunty rice-bowl adaptation of the California roll. You’ll get diced avocado, shredded egg, crabmeat, fish roe, and mayonnaise, all tossed over rice and served in a flash. There’s also the tasty buta-mayo don (ginger pork with mayonnaise and cabbage), buta-kim don (pork with kimchi ), and yakiniku don (grilled beef with lettuce and mayo). The compact 16-seat spot is from the fine folk who brought us Ebi Ten. Regular servings are $6.50 (small $5.50). Self-serve jars of multicoloured tsukemono (Japanese pickles) and ginger provide the right crunch.
