Mental Beast's Christmas Compilation unites musicians and comics

By Gregory Adams,

Vancouver’s music and comedy communities will spread holiday cheer with a monthlong multimedia event beginning next week. Spearheaded by promoter Cameron Reed and comedian Conor Holler, Mental Beast combines a Christmas-themed music compilation with a Web series, premiering with a teaser episode this Monday (November 30).

“It surrounds the story of a radio station about to go under due to ambiguous funding cuts,” Reed explained to the Straight. The floundering staff attempts to save the station by putting together a Christmas album, setting in motion the synergy between the fictional show and the real-life acts.

In six audio-only episodes, radio hosts Kevin and Dave—played by Holler and Craig Anderson of comedy duo Bronx Cheer—will interview bands including Vancougar and Apollo Ghosts. Six video episodes, meanwhile, take a behind-the-scenes look at the dysfunctional station, with all proceeds from The Christmas Compilation, as well as a concert at the Biltmore on December 18, going to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.

Holler says he hopes the project will get the hipster set into the Christmas spirit.

“Cam and I wanted to make Christmas attractive to a younger demographic. Traditionally it’s been very Bing Crosby,” he said. “We wanted people to get excited about the holiday season in a way they’d be open to.”

Mental Beast begins airing regularly at www.mentalbeast.com/ on December 7, with The Christmas Compilation dropping on December 17.
