The multilingual, open-hearted singer Lhasa de Sela has died at the age of 37 after battling breast cancer. According to her Web site, she passed away in her Montreal home just before midnight on New Year's Day.
Her first album, La Llorona, wowed the critics in 1997 and led to a Juno award the following year for best global artist.
Lhasa's second album, The Living Road, was named one of the top 10 albums of the decade by the Times of London. It featured her singing in English, Spanish, and French.
Her final album was the self-titled LHASA. Because of her illness, she cancelled a tour to promote it. She also didn't live long enough to complete an album featuring the songs of Victor Jara and Violeta Parra.
She is survived by her partner Ryan, her parents Alejandro and Alexandra, nine brothers and sisters, and 16 nieces and nephews.
