Apple CEO Steve Jobs is expected to unveil his company’s long-rumoured touchscreen tablet computer on January 27.

The California-based company has sent invitations to selected media outlets to “Come see our latest creation”.

The “invitation-only event” will take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco, starting at 10 a.m.

Sources told the Wall Street Journal earlier this month that Apple will begin shipping a 10- or 11-inch tablet in March.

Apple’s event comes after Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer showed off an underwhelming selection of slate PCs in a keynote address on January 6, ahead of the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show.

Apple's come (late) to the Netbook party with no keyboard. I expect an entry level price under $500 for an I-touch on steroids.

February 27th is going to be an awesome day. Should be an iPhone-esque launch of what will be the standard for all tablet computers to come. Lots of contenders launched at CES this year but they honestly they're not that exciting, seriously Ballmer? I've been using a 3rd party tablet mac for a few years now and I love it (http://www.axiotron.com). I'm hoping Apple works in a digital magazine/book subscription model so it can be used for e-reading as well as live media. Much like the iPhone this rumour has been spinning around for years so it'll be nice to see the cat finally out of the bag... it might actually eat my mouse.
