Singer-turned-actress Olivia Newton-John is heading back to the big screen in the genre she first rose to worldwide fame in—musicals.
But the strange twist of fate is that it's a Canadian production that will be hopelessly devoted to the nation's most beloved sport, believe it or not.
The Grease and Xanadu star will appear in Michael McGowan's Score: A Hockey Musical.
The cast includes several Canadian singer-songwriters, such as Hawksley Workman, Dave Bidini, and Marc Jordan, in addition to actors such as Stephen McHattie, Allie MacDonald, and Noah Reid (who is also a musical performer).
Newton-John and Jordan (who are also cowriting and performing the film's closing song) will play the intellectual parents of a sheltered, home-schooled seventeen-year-old hockey player (Reid) who becomes an overnight sensation when he's signed to a junior league team, much to his parents' dismay. But he soon has to contend with increased pressures, such as being expected to fight on the ice.
McGowan, whose previous films include One Week starring Joshua Jackson and Saint Ralph, will shoot the film in Toronto from February 1 to March 8.
The movie is set for an October 22 release.
