Score: A Hockey Musical gets Nelly (Furtado)

Score: A Hockey Musical just got nelly.

Nelly Furtado, that is.

The Victoria-born singer will appear in a supporting role in Michael McGowan's movie, a musical  about Canada's national sport. Furtado will join other previously announced  music stars such as Olivia Newton-John, Hawksley Workman, Marc Jordan, and Dave Bidini.

She'll be playing an ardent hockey fan, whose love for the sport will contrast with the dismay of the highbrow  parents (Newton-John and Jordan) of a boy who rockets to stardom after being signed to a junior hockey team.

In a press release, McGowan stated that he wrote the role specifically for Furtado: "Nelly is an incredible entertainer and, after speaking with her, I realized that she fully relished embracing her inner hockey fanatic."

There's no word yet on whether or not she'll be writing and performing her songs. But her music has been used with sports in the past. Her song "Forca" (which included lyrics in both English and Portuguese) became the official anthem of the 2004 European Football Championship.

Furtado has previously had roles in Max Payne and CSI: NY.
