With the 2010 Winter Games set to open on Friday (February 12), Olympic venues in Vancouver are surrounded by a maze of security checkpoints, fences, and road closures.

Here's a look at the visible security presence around B.C. Place, GM Place, and the Vancouver Olympic Village.

Better to stay away, as far away as possible, unless, of course, you are attending a protest. This entire event is madness. From the glorification of physicality (and the ignoring of intellectual, artistic, political and most importantly, moral and spiritual development) to the commodification of spectator sports, the exploitation of the taxpayer, the corruption of politics, and the manipulation of public perception through a monopolized, complicit media to manufacture terror and justify Orwellian social reforms, the entire thing is an abomination. Sports should be about character, comradery, fun, excellence, teamwork, fitness and participation, not this insanity! It's time to cancel the Olympics and start all over. I spent many years training to be an Olympic athlete, but not to be part of this overblown excuse to make money and terrorize the populace.

Hmmmm
Isn't it ironic how the anti Olympic people have ended up costing us more money because of security and their stupid threats!!! Grow up people and get real jobs, stop being professional protestors on the taxpayers dime.

What concerns me is not the Olympics itself, more worried about what will remain after the event. After spending the money and building security infrastructure; command center in Surrey to monitor all kinds of security camera's, etcetera, as an example. Will big brother be like the GST and never go away? Second point and fear. The co-operation between Canada and The US on security is pretty extensive. From NORAD watching and controling our airspace to the US Coast Guard and RCMP patrolling the coast of not only BC, but Washington State as well. This pilot program in the name of Olympic security authorizes the US coast guard to enforce "laws" in Canadian waters. Plus the mentioned command center in Surrey is staff with US border patrol agents, as well as Canadian. Does not make me feel safer knowing that RCMP are authorized to enforce the law in the USA. Makes me wonder whats really going on in the name of Olympic security--- Why this NATO peacekeeping style of security? I.e: American law enforcement and military working side by side with Canadian counterparts. Will those pilot programs remain after the olympics? Thats the million dollar question and think the answer is the same as the temporary GST. Its the fed and big brother after all. I'll place the safe bet and not only say yes, some big brother security will remain. The co=operation between Canada and the US will also remain. Bigger bet well see the land border shut down and end of Canada in about 10 years!

wha?
I don't think the IOC needs a submarine to combat protesters.

The Terrorists are the thing.

omfg cry me a frickin river....once in a lifetime event and we've been dumping money into fruitless causes for far too long anyway...finally something tangible we can actually see.

Once in a lifetime?
