Flick picks: Celluloid Social Club, Dragons' Den audition tour
Overwhelmed by both pro- and anti-Olympic fervour in the city? Here are two upcoming film/TV-related events unrelated to the Winter Games that you might want to consider. (Because, believe it or not, life does go on outside the Olympics.)
Celluloid Social Club
The first event of 2010 by the Celluloid Social Club promises an amazing line-up of local film industry guests—with a lot of Oscar connections.
David Scearce, the local lawyer and screenwriter who adapted Christopher Isherwood's A Single Man, will participate in a question-and-answer session.
(Incidentally, Colin Firth is up for a best actor Oscar for his role in the film.)
Yesterday, the CSC announced that Monique Prudhomme, who is up for an costume design Oscar award for her work on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, will be joining the event as another special guest.
Sci-fi fans will want to take note that visual effects supervisor Jon Cowley from District 9 (which is up for four Oscars, including best visual effects) will also be there. Also in attendance will be Ryan Copple and Kaleena Kiff of Riese, who will talk about making and marketing a Web series, and Jodelle Ferland (Tideland, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse).
The event, to be held tomorrow (February 10, 8 p.m.) at the ANZA Club (3 West 8th Avenue, tickets $5 to $7), will also be the official launch of the fourth annual Hot Shot Shorts Contest.
Dragon's Den tour
CBC television has announced the 2010 audition schedule for their popular entrepreneurial competition Dragons' Den.
This year, the tour has grown to 40 stops across our nation. Vancouver hopefuls will have the chance to present their pitches on two dates: March 13 and 27. (They have noted, however, that all dates are subject to change.)
SunChips will also be rewarding the best Dragon's Den Greenvention, or the most environmental invention, with a $100,000 award. Eco pitches can be made at local audition sessions, or on-line from March 1 to April 22 (Earth Day).
Full details will be posted on-line at the Dragon's Den site.
