My Name Is Khan's box office success transcends controversy

In the Bollywood blockbuster My Name is Khan, Shahrukh Khan’s character, Rizvan Khan, inscribes himself into the American landscape and does so without obscuring his identity as a Muslim.

However, the actor’s own right to do so in his own country has been challenged by the right-wing Shiv Sena political party.

Khan spoke up recently after a cricket league draft process in which no Pakistani players were selected, including those who had played in previous seasons of the Indian Premier League. Khan’s criticism of this effective ban  was attacked by the Shiv Sena leadership who threatened to block the opening of his film in India.

The fact that one of the iconic figures of India has had to defend his right to make political comments is appalling.

Yet ironically, in a case of life imitating art, the attacks on Khan have only added poignancy and power to the message of this film, which opened in theatres on Friday, February 12.

The film is reported to have grossed $18 million over the weekend.

The film grossed $1.94 million in North America, and ranked number ten on the Canadian weekend box office charts (grossing $347,361 in Canada).

SRK really sent out his message aloud in MNIK. Once again he proved that he is the supreme star. Very strong yet very humble, received hatred, humiliation all along his way still only giving love and compassion, it needs a lot of courage and determination. Congratulations SRK. Thackrey and all needs to learn a lesson here. Their acts only portray their cowardice and brings shame to them and helps to prove the brilliance of SRK. Mr. thackrey you must watch this movie. It is a message for humankind. Every time SRK says “My name is Khan and I am not a terrorist” we just can’t control your tears. Well done SRK. We love you.
