Live music in Vancouver gets double-blow

City officials have levelled another blow at pesky kids and their damn jungle music. A popular jam space at 314 West Hastings Street has been closed after a visit from Vancouver’s building-inspections branch on February 17, leaving some hundred bands, including the Pack AD and Thee Manipulators, to find new homes. Predictably, it was a permit issue that caused the problem. The building was approved for office use but not as a rehearsal space.

In other news, the Wall Financial Corporation is taking over the funky El Dorado Motor Hotel on Kingsway. That means no more live music in the downstairs bar, which has become a popular replacement for the Cobalt since it started booking shows last November.

“It’s pretty sad,” general manager Puneet Sharan told the Straight. “We finally got the place rolling, people seemed to be having fun there, and the developer comes in and says, ”˜That’s it.’ ” Reckoner, Winston Campaign, and Burning Ghats will be the last bands to take the El D’s shin-level stage on March 6. Meanwhile, booker Dave Disaster would like to continue the good work at a new venue and can be reached at eldoradobooking@hotmail.com.

AWWWWW that really sucks... I just played a gig at the Eldo for the first time in years, and we had a decent turnout! It's by no means a note for note match for the Cobalt, but it's half decent... or at least it was I guess. Even with the surly drunk regulars.
