Starting on Wednesday (March 10), the Paralympic torch relay will be in town.
The City of Vancouver released today (March 9) the following details about its route and schedule:
Hillcrest-Riley Park
Time: March 10, 2010 Wednesday from 11 am - 1 pm
Place: Hillcrest/Riley Park Community Centre
Celebration Format:
A unique flame creation ceremony by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation will kick off the Paralympic Torch Relay. The Flame will travel in a circular route in Riley Park with exchanges taking place along the route and a street party on Ontario Street. The event will be launched by Mayor Robertson along with other municipal officials.Downtown-Robson Square
Time: March 11-12, 2010 2 pm – 2 pm (24 hours)
Place: Robson Square, Vancouver Downtown
Celebration Format:
The 24-hour Torch Relay will start from the stage at Robson Square and the Paralympic Flame will travel in a repeated loop along Howe, Georgia, Granville, Smithe, Bute and Robson with the exchanges of the Flame taking place at various locations. Celebration activities will include simultaneous live entertainment, sponsor activities, sports demos and cultural crafts display. The ice rink at Robson Square will be open for free public skating and the Zipline will open on March 12 at 10 am.
The eight Paralympic torchbearers who will represent Vancouver are athletes Paul Gauthier and Donavan Tildesley, youths Priya Sekhon and Sarah Cheung, city staffers Bonnie Friesen and Betty Harris, and community organizers Craig McCord and Ann Carr.
On Thursday (March 11), the torch relay will also visit the University of British Columbia’s Point Grey campus, which lies outside the city limits.
According to the Vanoc Web site, the UBC celebration will take place by the Student Union Building and will begin at 11 a.m.
