917 Main rises from the Cobalt's ashes

By Adrian Mack,

After all the gnashing of teeth when wendythirteen’s lease expired last year, the Cobalt has reopened as a venue—but under new proprietors and a new name: 917 Main. Bartenders Patryk Drozd and Ezra Kish were looking for a club of their own when “what fell into our lap was the Cobalt”, according to Drozd. “It was a no-brainer,” he told the Straight. “We took over on October 1st and spent about four months in reno. We gutted the place, put in a new bar top, new ceiling, and floor.”

Drozd enlisted tradespeople friends to do the work, and opened the doors to 917 Main on February 1 with a mix of live music, jam nights, and DJ sets. The grand opening is yet to come, however. “We’re trying to get a big band,” Drozd said. “I don’t wanna say who, but it’s going to be awesome. It’s an indie-rock band from East Vancouver.” Drozd added that the mystery act falls within his and Kish’s larger mandate. “We’re really stoked on supporting the neighbourhood and the local music scene,” he said. “We have a stage, and we fit 200—come on down!”

It's good to see that A. Mack is not going to let a tiny insignificant thing like fact get in the way of a story.
What exactly does "support the neighborhood" mean anyhow? Are Pat and Ezra going to help crippled hookers across the street? Perhaps the indie rockers from east van will fly in on magical plaid scarves and clean up the needles and puke? I would pay to see that.

A Concerned Citizen
Lame new Venue with very little artist support, except for scensters who think its now cool cuz there in "the cobalt". NO ONE, and I do mean absolutely NO ONE, will ever help support that neighborhood like Wendy 13 did. She gave homeless people work, and even fed them christmas and thanksgiving dnner! Let me see the yuppies do anything like that. I think they mean support the trend seekers of main street not the actual neiborhood!

NOT impressed
Fuck the fauxbalt! Wendy cleaned that place up from being a needle infested crack house, and what does she get? Fucking bashed by everyone who don't even know the real story behind the once legendary cobalt. Now it'll be nothing but a yuppie hipster dj bar. Not impressed. Never will I step foot in there unless it was to spit on their shiney new floor. All hail Wendy Thirteen, R.I.P cobes, forever missed. The greatest bar vancouver will ever see.

fuck the fauxbalt
fucking gay

Jr.
I guess "fell in to our lap" is a euphemism for "conspired with a slumlord". This venue is not called 917 Main, it is called the Fauxbalt.

Check it out: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fauxbalt

what fucking ever...
rises from the ashes? what a joke...just like the fauxbalt is. a fucking joke.

.many will try but none will ever be the cobes.
r.i.p cobes

Wendy for Mayer
I stepped foot inside the fauxbalt during the olympics just to piss all over the 'new' bathroom walls. Those ass holes even left some old band stickers up on the bathroom door. Maybe they thought it would be 'underground' and 'hardcore' to keep some of the remains. A scenester approached me and said "I like your outfit , its better then all the try-hards here" .... what a Dumb FUCK.

Gave the owner a piece of mind on the way out the door...
Still makes me feel sick to my stomach ... what has this city come too?

Izzy
I give it 6 months max before they go broke...max As a matter of fact, the only time I'll ever go there is to see them Charlie Brown shuffle their pathetic asses out of the bar trailing behind them the abyss of debt they dug for themselves via their crooked politics.

Hipster Douchebags
Should have located themselves 20 blocks south.
Can't wait for the owner to screw them over too...

Wendy13 was great... This place wont ever be the same without her at the helm. Having toured across the country multiple times i always looked forward to the Cobalt show where one knew you would be treated very fairly, paid properly with no bullshit excuses and there was always a good vibe there... I look at the photos online and I see 'gino douchebag' types that like to start fights and plastic bitches that gauge men on their shoes and the type of car they drive. Booo to this new venue.

4t4
suck it up kidz. i was in that shithole when i was just a little boy watchin the girlsgirlsgirls. the puke years are fucking over thankfully. go find another shitpile to bury your heads in, there's always one festering away somewhere.

doucette
who wasnt in the bar back then? what does that era have to do with Wendy13? She took it from being a hovel full of lowlifes, druggies and rubbies and thieves and made it a trusted venue that bands from all over the world played at when they came to Vancouver. This article boasts about a band from East Van playing the venue.. woooopty doo. Wendy had bands from EU, USA and all over Canada playing there on a regular basis. Big names, small names, no names, pseudo names, 4T4, you WILL suck it up, whilst on your knees in the men's room Im sure.. How long till this venue finds itself listed on 'Squirt.com'

The Cobalt was more than just a bar, it was a home away from home for thousands of like minded people. You could go down at any time and run into people you knew and have a good time. Go to other clubs and your gear gets ripped off, or the doormen are knobs who dont "get" moshing, and toss you out for nothing.
You cannot compare any other bar to the Cobalt, it was unique. There was an aura of respect across the board, a rare thing these days.
Now? It's just another Ed Hardy douchebar of which there are dozens in the city. Willing to bet there are way more pools of puke in these trendy cesspools, as the patrons cant handle their liquor like us Hardcore types.
I'm sure the neibourhood is gonna love the 2AM Gino brawls outside nightly, as I'm sure will happen. One just has to look at the Granville strip and the chaos that goes on down there to see what the "hood" is in for.

LOL @ antihipsters
By the intelligence of these comments, I am not surprised that their other form of protest is to spray urine indiscriminately.

You're making the hipsters look good. (Well, they look good anyway, that is part of being a hipster -- but you know what I mean.)

Wahhh Wahh Wahh.
The lease wasn't renewed, and the landlord (slumlord tho' he may be) has a right to do whatever he wants with the place.
Metal and hardcore shows are already finding more venues in town, whether they're Wendy's or someone else's events. Sure, that's not the same as having a dedicated venue to go to any night, but everything changes... just like the Cobalt was a biker bar and then a titty bar, etc, before its punk incarnation under Wendy - when suddenly the name became trademarked or something? The Cobalt changing hands again isn't the end of the scene; the sky's not falling.
New management graciously re-named the space and dropped the "Legendary" prefix after the amusing online conspiracy theory CAPS LOCK hissy fit, which lead to the threats towards the current venue and potential performers.
I miss the Old Cobalt too, but geez, people, calm down. Wendy's already booking more shows in other venues, and sooner or later someone's going to find a suitable permanent venue again - just be sure the landlord keeps the electricity and plumbing up to code.

I wonder how much drama there would have been if the Cobalt name was just immediately retired after Wendy had her go. But why would it be? It's the name of the building, isn't it? I still see a big sign for the Cobalt Hotel out front, with the same font. Are they gonna be accused of exploiting the name now too?

Let it go. Spilt milk, folks.

BrokeCryBabies@NoFunCouver
Woe people - we all know that The Cobalt Rocked that is Legend! But come on people we all know Wendy got evicted on legal terms. Its a live music venue and that's good for a city that has lost many over the years - glad it's not a Starbucks. The new guys didn't conspire to take it over and if they did where is the proof, the place was getting the gears from the city and the health dept.
None of you cry babies have seen it or been inside... so far it IS the neighbor hood and a lot of ex Cobes too I might add.
The less than one percent of one percent that are bitching about " Ed Hardy bridge and tunnel rejects" should save there pennies and open a new place of there own - hell buy Pub 340 - I gave 917 a chance and went in with an open mind
and ran into some old Cobes buddies, we had mixed feelings but still had a good time. When the do get some hardcore bands are you going to bitch at the bands too?

I am in a band and have been to the Cobes to see many of an awesome live show I hope to see some great shows at 917 too, its close to the neighbor hood and the beer is cheap. Anyways...
HAVING A LIVE MUSIC STAGE IS A GOOD THING IN NOFUNCOUVER THE IGNORANT RANTING ON HERE IS POINTLESS IN THE BIG PICTURE.
Live in the past or build a future for cryin out loud.

Dr. Delicious
9 years is a pretty damn good run, so why's it so hard to start something in a new space?

Only in Vancouver will you have people ragging on a place that wants to support local music because it's "different" than it was a few months ago.

With all due respect, and I being a music fan in this city know she deserves a lot, Wendy 13 should have put everything up to code. If she couldn't afford it, tough break.

So far this sounds like a good thing. The supporters of The Cobalt on this comment page come across as whining pussies.

I'm thoroughly confused here. The new proprietors had nothing (as in zero, zilch, nada) to do with wendythirteen's departure from the Cobalt. Moreover, they have come in determined to keep the room going as a live music venue, one with (let's be honest here) some sorely needed upgrades.

And people are (literally) pissing all over their efforts...why, exactly? Can we all not at least give them the benefit of the doubt by waiting to see just what sort of place 917 Main turns out to be, rather than assuming the worst?

Jesus H. Christ, people...

Bo Hooligans
Typical comment rant fest.
Glad to see someone is shaping up the city. The Cobalt was a dump of the highest order.
Crappy bands, scummy mohawked "posers" (sic) and losers all gathered together in a venue that looked even more pathetic than when it was a thrid rate peeler bar or when it was a biker douchebag bar...
See, punk rawk bars don't contribute anything because they are a closed system in an economic sense. They simply attract flies...
Broken toilets, wobbly tables, sticky floors, dirty beer lines, cockroaches, fruitlflies, drug addled clientele..yeah..a place where spurious business meets skid row halfway.. RIGHT ON! YOU GO TANK GIRL GO!

And of course the douchenozzlers slamming Ezra and his crew don't realize he has opened other venues that cater to local music/fans, and whether they know it or not is actually spending HIS hard earned money to bring that to life.

The bottom line is money kids. You have to pay bands and put bums in the seats...not Punk rawk unemployed bums that is...
I guess when you hang out all day at the Douchebalt, with no job,no money, no style, no class and no brains and they close it down, it makes you kinda sad.
Well boo hoo for you.

Go and open a bar yourselves and go get a booze license and quit whining..
OH wait..you can't get a booze license... You need to shower up for that, have valid i.d. and some moneh...
Because Punk is cheap, it takes moneh to open a Whiskey..(a-go-go)
Guess it's back to the Cambie for all you revolutionaries...
Cheap beer, an armada of welfare rif raff and white rastas...mmmmmmmm

Viva La Douche-a-lution...

When you have money enough to keep a place open, open a new one or at least pay to get in, you can complain then. otherwise shut it crybablies...

The hell with all of you metalhead posers. You guys are a bunch of douchebags. You obviously don't have the intellect or the class that you need to get anything done in this world. Winners like Pat and Ezra will always be there to clean out the human garbage that you all are. I can't wait to party it up at this great new venue that's going to attract a higher level of person.

SO TO ALL THE CLASS WAR DECLARING YUPPSTERS WHO SUPPORT THIS VENUE GENTRIFICATION I ASK YOU”¦..EXACTLY HOW MUCH IS THE SWEAT EQUITY WORTH THAT WE PUT INTO THE COBALT FOR 10 YEARS?

I GUESS ACCORDING TO YOUR TERMS OF SOCIETY”¦NOTHING”¦BECAUSE PHYSICAL MONEY IS THE ONLY INTEGRITY THAT COUNTS TO YOU”¦

WE WERE A D.I.Y. COMMUNITY”¦WE WORKED WITH WHAT WE HAD AND MADE A GO OF IT FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS”¦WE DROVE THE DRUG DEALERS AND SEX WORKERS OUT”¦..WE BATTLED CONSTANT PLUMBING PROBLEMS AND VERMIN FROM THE HOTELUPSTAIRS”¦.THESE ISSUES WERE BARELY EVER ADDRESSED BY THE LANDLORDS”¦WE DID THE GRUNT WORK”¦

TWO GUYS FROM GRANVILLE COME AROUND WITH $$$ AND WAVE THAT IN FRONT GREEDY LANDLORD$ WITH FALSE PROMISES OF SOUNDPROOFING AND NO LIVE MUSIC ”¦.

OF COURSE WE WOULD BE UNCEREMONIOUSLY EVICTED”¦BECAUSE HEART AND SOUL DOESN’T MATTER TO THIS MARRIAGE OF MONEY”¦

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE WOULD BE INSTRUMENTAL IN TAKING OVER A LIVE MUSIC INSTITUTION THEN TURN AROUND AND DECLARE THEY WANT TO SUPPORT LIVE MUSIC”¦?

SO YEAH YOU CAN SLAP UP SOME DRYWALL FOR A CEILING ”¦ THROW DOWN SOME STAINED PLYWOOD ”¦HANG SOME CHANDELIERS AND CALL IT AN IMPROVEMENT UNTIL THE HOTEL ITSELF TAKES ITS TOLL”¦BUT THAT STILL DOESN’T CHANGE THE FACT THAT IN THIS DEBACLE HEAVY LIVE MUSIC LOST A HOME WE BUILT AND CHERISHED FOR ALMOST 10 YEARS”¦.

BACKLASH”¦.OF COURSE”¦.BECAUSE MOST PEOPLE CARE WHEN WHAT MATTERS TO THEM GETS SHAFTED BY GREED”¦

SO HERE WE ARE”¦THE SURVIVORS THAT HAVE TO START FROM SCRATCH AGAIN ”¦. YOU CAN COVET OUR HOME BUT ITS DOUBTFUL YOULL ACHIEVE THE ESSENSE THAT THE COBES HELD”¦. MONEY CAN’T BUY THAT”¦

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR CARING LANDLORD$ ”¦

^ My thanks to the faceless/anonymous poster above. ^
I've ALWAYS wanted to get published in connection with the Straight, and you saved me the trouble by writing this yourself. So thanks! You're a bit off in your impersonation of me though. If I were to GENUINELY post anything here, it probably would have been a bit more vitriolic. (And certainly not class-oriented, something most of these whining pussies seem to be obssessed with).
I LOVE the Internet. It's the place where faceless anonymous cowards can do virtually (arf arf!) anything!

The 917 Main crew initially tried to pretend that they were just community-minded independent music supporters. When challenged, though, they've revealed themselves to be the classist, gentrifying schmucks we always knew them to be. I guess they're having a tough time disabusing themselves of their self-aggrandizing assumption that having bags of cash to take over venues meant they were going to be welcomed with open arms when they did it. I would play the world's smallest violin for them if I could be bothered to; but really, I can't.

wendythirteen lost her source of income, her business, not to mention that the Cobalt was a home for a community (now fragmented). She could take it to court. Having a handshake agreement for 9 or 10 years is like having a written lease and Pal Sahota should have said to her in all fairness that there was someone else that offered more money or offered to put their own money in it and she could have come back with an offer. But he didn't, he gave her the eviction and ran. She was not evicted over any concrete reason, not the health department, not the city for noise, not the liquor inspector.
What we lost was the freedom to be, act, exist to an extreme in a bar that is not easily reproduced with another bar, you get kicked out for just looking the wrong way at a bouncer. Whether you like punk or djs you got to appreciate choice and freedom. Ezrah and Drodz are corporate, not community minded, otherwise why would they have destroyed a community. We lost the most extreme place in the city, pretty soon we will all look alike too.
There is no other bar to operate and make a living from as she did with the cobalt. She books shows sure at different bars now, but once a month and it is booking. You make no money from it.
Buying a place like Pub 340 would cost $3.5 million dollars, and to build a space and have it legit, you would have to buy a liquor license at 300k if they decide to give you one. It forces the scene to go underground and the new clubs employ djs over musicians.
The article says "teeth gnashing" like wendy's loss of income and business is just chalked up to feminine hysterics, and there is Patryk saying "east van band" trying to build up street cred.
I BLAME THE CITY! If they didn't make it so damned hard to get a liquor license then none of this would have happened.

Well that doesn't seem like the words of the Sean Law I know.
I just want to say thanks to Wendy, Chi, and all the great people that I met and that helped me find something and experience music that was off the beat n' path when I was but an ugly and lonely teen. The Java Joint and the Cobalt will always be personally remembered as life changing especially as "progress" makes everything pretty once again. Glad that the Astoria and Funky Winker Beans are still supporting the discarded, ugly and wonderfully talented people. Better than a stick in the eye.

"Human garbage", Mr. Law? I hope we meet someday. In a dark alley. Alone.

I'm not even a bit surprised by the condescending attitudes of the hipster shitheads supporting the slumlord takeover of the Cobalt. What was once a community will now be turned into a festering hole, covered up with bright lights, shellac, and terrible music. But isn't that what their whole "scene" is based on? Taking (a lot of ecstacy/) someone else's hard work, and "spinning" it to make it look as though they've created something wonderful?

Fuck the Fauxbalt, and fuck the patrons. You're helping something terrible.

The Cobalt was my favorite bar for many years.. seen some of the best live shows there.. for a while Wendy moved to the Astoria and lead the mighty Asbalt which was a pretty decent spot as well. Not only was the Cobalt an awesome venue for live music but it was also an awesome karaoke bar.. Wendy had an enormous list of songs to choose from and the positive vibe in the bar was like no other in Vancouver. Bringing together all walks of life this location was perfect. Not only did I witness countless wicked shows like the Dayglos and SNFU (eg.) but I met a lot of really cool people and made a lot of friends. The Cobalt will forever be part of my life.. RIP

if i hear the word poser or douche one more time i swear to god. You're all fucking retards (i mean ALL of you. metalheads, punks, indie darlings, yuppies fucking whatever) I'm a metalhead. I'm not posing as anything. with that said, who the fuck cares. i agree with both parties. a) we should stop whining and fucking get on supporting our beloved music scene. b) you yuppie fucks or whatever it is that some metalheads feel justified in calling you need to shut up about us because you don't know anything more about us than we do about you. and likewise. I dont know about punks, but i'm a gainfully employed, drug free adult who pays bills and taxes and buys my own gear and feed and clothe myself and all that wonderful shit that sums up a "higher level person" I guess the difference between me and you is simple taste, isnt it? I think your hair looks retarded, you think mine needs to be washed more often. I like grind. you like lady gaga or whatever. fine. but get one thing straight. the patrons of the cobalt motor hotel were not (atleast on any occasion i witnessed, which is many) the patrons of the venue downstairs. we are not fucking crackheads. we're not scum nor are we human garbage. some of us are dirty, some of us would rather remember that theres a planet with dirt and life on it here. not just stainless appliances. and theres pre shredded jeans and sideways haircuts and whatever else you people are into and its not cool of us to generalize you either. even if we strongly disagree with your ways. and every time i hear one of you make such a broad generalization on behalf of all fans of extreme music because of the opinions of a varying percentage it literally makes me want to retract the statement i just made and go burn the goddamn place down so it's just done and gone and everyone just shuts the fuck up about it....see? this is perpetual. the more everyone bitches and slams the more anger cause that spurs a reaction, which is cause for rebuttal which makes people angrier which causes.....

you know? so everybody do everybody else a favor and just.....i dunno man. go do something useful. i for one. am going to go restring my bass and bang some fuckin jib...and never brush my hair.....and maybe rob an old lady.

Sean Law
actually, i change my mind. 917 main is so terribly awful, it made all my hair fall out.thats why i dont smile in pictures(like all assholes). someone should kick my ass. but seeing as how i only talk shit online, and not to anyones face (as that would involve a spine and a set of balls) i think i can go on living my pathetic life un hurt. heres a little quote to leave you with "im a fucking loser who never gets laid and i suck" S3AN LAW

i think that is joke, wendy has done so much for the community, and for the local music scene, and is giving no credit. where else can you go and see a wicked live punk or metal venue. i remeber the cobalt prior to wendy and the area, that area improved vastly i have lots of great memories of the cobalt its sad its all about the dollar bill that wrecks it wendy was bullied out by fucking yuppsters just because you didnt like our hair or clothes

mike hills
question????
1) why didnt the old tenants sign a new lease?
2) how long did this go on for (no lease)?

Cherry
disappointing. 917 Main = fauxbalt. Time will swallow it up. Enjoy it while it lasts then go back to Granville St.

as much as we will all miss the cobes (and the wicked awesome chicken place next door), let's make a new one! sure it's not going to be the same, but think of it like a good pair of boots, just gotta be broken in. let's find a warehouse, a random house er something and fucken give'r. we can byob for now and one day finally find a good bar to take over.

as for you hipster yuppie peices of shit; i'd watch your step if i were you. our men actually have meat on them and look like... men! (who would'a thought!)... we also aren't afraid to talk shit in person. if i wasn't 500 km away i would be saying this in front of you right now.

Holy crap, what sweeping generalizations and hateful stereotypes some of you make about a music subculture you obviously do NOT understand or appreciate. This speaks to the general misinformed politics of this city that infect (and affect) the subsequent misguided decisions.

Contrary to the above misconceptions about metalheads, I just so happen to be a well educated (master's degree) professional, and I too loved the punk/metal/hardcore cobalt in all its character. Until it closed Sept 30, 2009, it was always the FIRST place I would choose to go in Vancouver to experience great music, incredible musical talent, and genuine camaraderie and respect. One doorman was all that was needed for "security": all regulars knew the code of conduct and did not disrespect it. I knew I could always walk in there, as a single woman, and hang out with many friends and fellow hardcore/metal music lovers, and NOT have to worry about unwanted disrespectful attention from men (I NEVER go to Granville or 97% of other Vancouver bars for that reason).

Sure, a few other metal-playing venues exist, but they are cold, boring, and do not offer gigs to the up and coming smaller metal (and punk or hardcore) bands that Wendy used to give a chance to (some of which are now touring provincially, nationally and internationally). Wendy also attracted some amazing international bands to the Cobalt, who knew of the bar from their homes in South America, the U.S., and Europe. I saw TONS of shows at the Cobalt that I KNOW I never would have seen anywhere else (especially in Vancouver). It brought the local and international together under one roof, all in the love of live hardcore, metal, and punk music.

So contrary to many of the most recent ignorant comments above, this is NOT about "class"; it's about COMMUNITY. We only need to look around to see how rare a "sense of community" is these days, in whose absence is the presence of many unnecessary conflicts and social problems.

Long live the true Cobalt!!

this is such a joke......
so some lady by the name of wendy13 couldn't secure her lease so she takes it out 2 guys that could.....I guess calling a slum lord a slum lord doesnt really work when it comes time to negotiate a secure lease ....

Ya the cobalt was great and i always had a good time there, but things change just like...

regarding the hipster "subculture", go to the Adbusters website and read the article on hipsters.

I don't get all this hate from the "metalheads" and "punks". I listen to absolutely all types of music and in my three + decades of that listening I could hear predominantly positive vibes coming out of all the metal and "punk".

The people on here telling others to "watch their backs" and in general spreading hate towards "hipsters" don't really get the music.

In all the shit in the world today music should be something that only brings people together.

If this is the type of hate I had coming my way silently when I was at The Cobalt I wish I'd never gone there. Not only did I not dress like 90% of the people there, I have a different skin color. I suppose thanks is in order to you haters for not pounding me because I didn't look anything like you and listen to a variety of music.

Also, if any of you haters want to talk shit to my face about the way I dress or the color of my skin then bring it on. Once you draw first blood you'll be on the floor pretty quick.

Human (not hipster, metalhead, punk or any other lame label defined by anything)

“We’re trying to get a big band,” Drozd said. “I don’t wanna say who, but it’s going to be awesome. It’s an indie-rock band from East Vancouver." So in fact what you mean is nobody's coming, cause there are no "BIG" indie rock bands just the shitty ones you see in Exclaim and Chart Also, everyone leave Adrian Mack alone, he has bills to pay and mouths to feed, so its okay for him to sell out like he just did.

Pat & Ezra are doing a great job, never was a huge fan of the Cobalt before and now been there a couple times since the re-opening and am enjoying the vibe a bit more, feels a bit fresher, excited to see what they do with it.......change is always nice!

The Skinny Magazine
Sahota, Ezrah and Patryk can have each other! I am almost starting to feel sorry for them because no matter how much makeup they put on it - it is still stingy, slippery, Satan-like, Sahota owned!

We (wendythirteen, the Skinny Magazine and more and growing) will be throwing a huge concert in the summer called Hardcore Needs a Home. wendythirteen suggested a collective to start a new place, because it will take more than one person to make it happen. If it was so easy to do why didn't ezra and patryk do it? They couldn't. They couldn't get the liquor license from the tight fisted city that they wanted for the Balmoral so they took the Cobalt over or it was offered to them on a silver platter by el cheapo bastardo Sahota. NOBODY TALKED TO WENDY THIRTEEN during the 60 days to eviction. I think there was a letter from Ezrah but it was too late, but what could be said?..ooops sorry I ate your small slice of pie...BURP!
AND SO Let's leave 917 Main to the DJs.

IF you really care about a new home, and you're in a band and want to play Hardcore Needs a Home, or you want to help: email theskinny@theskinnymag.info. We might have it in a warehouse or outdoors. Got any ideas as to location or a nearby land? Should fit an army. Our goal is to raise money for a more secure place, away from the shady and shitty dealings of Sahota and to raise awareness or paint signs for a massive protest if the city won't make it easier to get a liquor license. Bison started out at the Cobalt by the way and now they are signed to Metal Blade. I guess that happens in DJ land too., good luck 917 Main.

The Skinny Mag is starting to book FUNKY'S 35 W. Hastings, 186 capacity, no crystal chandelier, no pretensions, just cheap beer and live bands (wanna play? email theskinny@theskinnymag.info).
Skinny Upcomings at Funky's: March Friday 16th Hooker Pop, Living Deadbeats, the Electric Demons. / April 9 Haddonfield (from Victoria), Deadcats, Duomatic System / April 23 Motorama, the Gamelons, Joyce Collingwood / May 14 Indian Wars, Student Teacher, Bummer High / May 28 Defektors, La Corde from San Fran, Vapid/ and more more more like Glorywhore, The Furies, Real Problems, Collapsing Opposites, Like Animals Again and more... more dates are opening up for us. Just email us with your idea of a gig and we can put you in a Friday, Sat or Sunday. (xoxo to all bands east side or west side - where the fuck ever - and tswassen!!!)

wendy thirteen has some nights coming up: next one is April 16 and will secure more. But this is not a living, I repeat. She is not running the bar like she did at the Cobalt, so this is temporary.

The matter of the fact is that if the lease was up for grabs, then all those haters (and lovers(even you and I)) also had the opportunity to sign a lease and secure a joint for the next whatever years to come (yes, that includes metalheads and hipsters)....oh you didnt know??? or did the queen of metal not tell you that because she knew (how do you not know). This is why you (with a lawyer) sign your lease especially with so called slum lords. this is called "minding your business".....you guys (and i at the beginning) are blaming the wrong people (hipsters opportunist or whatever u want to call them) .....the best part of it all is that we're giving these guys free press and drumming up support for them and we don't even know it. BTW 1500 ppls hate pages like the Fauxbalt and calling for a flashmob doesnt really help our scene get approved for a new location when it gets time to get approved by the city just incase someone really, really, really cares so much about the metal scene in vancouver. it sucks i know......i guess this is were you ask yourself "...what would Jesus do..." lol i am kidding but seriously people, this is making us look bad and no one is going to want to do business with metal heads ever again or for a really long time.

S my D to 917 crew
I guess afghanistan's lease is up, time for america to move in...

No room for the little guy.

No room for origionality and brotherhood.

Just faceless, pointless, consumption

At least metalheads consumed together and for the love of our metal home.

917 is garbage, Love live the Cobalt

Laughin' at the Punks
Man I used to love going down to the Cobalt, but all that is tarnished now! I always thought it was a place for real underground & hardcore, not a bunch of cry babies. Yes it was a scene, yes it's too bad's it's gone, but all the sulking in the world is not helping anyone. I didn't realize all those hardcores down at Wendy's bar were actually just laptop using, facebook crying posers. You like to name call the "hipsters", but who's really posing as something they're not. I figured real hardcore, would've just said screw the place, too mainstream anyway. Well, wipe your tears up, clean up the milk, and enjoy watching all sorts of talent walk into that place for shows. All this BS about no one wanting to play their is garbage. The only bands that won't play there are one's that nobody cares about anyway!
