917 Main rises from the Cobalt's ashes
After all the gnashing of teeth when wendythirteen’s lease expired last year, the Cobalt has reopened as a venue—but under new proprietors and a new name: 917 Main. Bartenders Patryk Drozd and Ezra Kish were looking for a club of their own when “what fell into our lap was the Cobalt”, according to Drozd. “It was a no-brainer,” he told the Straight. “We took over on October 1st and spent about four months in reno. We gutted the place, put in a new bar top, new ceiling, and floor.”
Drozd enlisted tradespeople friends to do the work, and opened the doors to 917 Main on February 1 with a mix of live music, jam nights, and DJ sets. The grand opening is yet to come, however. “We’re trying to get a big band,” Drozd said. “I don’t wanna say who, but it’s going to be awesome. It’s an indie-rock band from East Vancouver.” Drozd added that the mystery act falls within his and Kish’s larger mandate. “We’re really stoked on supporting the neighbourhood and the local music scene,” he said. “We have a stage, and we fit 200—come on down!”

What exactly does "support the neighborhood" mean anyhow? Are Pat and Ezra going to help crippled hookers across the street? Perhaps the indie rockers from east van will fly in on magical plaid scarves and clean up the needles and puke? I would pay to see that.
Check it out: http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fauxbalt
.many will try but none will ever be the cobes.
r.i.p cobes
Gave the owner a piece of mind on the way out the door...
Still makes me feel sick to my stomach ... what has this city come too?
Can't wait for the owner to screw them over too...
You cannot compare any other bar to the Cobalt, it was unique. There was an aura of respect across the board, a rare thing these days.
Now? It's just another Ed Hardy douchebar of which there are dozens in the city. Willing to bet there are way more pools of puke in these trendy cesspools, as the patrons cant handle their liquor like us Hardcore types.
I'm sure the neibourhood is gonna love the 2AM Gino brawls outside nightly, as I'm sure will happen. One just has to look at the Granville strip and the chaos that goes on down there to see what the "hood" is in for.
You're making the hipsters look good. (Well, they look good anyway, that is part of being a hipster -- but you know what I mean.)
The lease wasn't renewed, and the landlord (slumlord tho' he may be) has a right to do whatever he wants with the place.
Metal and hardcore shows are already finding more venues in town, whether they're Wendy's or someone else's events. Sure, that's not the same as having a dedicated venue to go to any night, but everything changes... just like the Cobalt was a biker bar and then a titty bar, etc, before its punk incarnation under Wendy - when suddenly the name became trademarked or something? The Cobalt changing hands again isn't the end of the scene; the sky's not falling.
New management graciously re-named the space and dropped the "Legendary" prefix after the amusing online conspiracy theory CAPS LOCK hissy fit, which lead to the threats towards the current venue and potential performers.
I miss the Old Cobalt too, but geez, people, calm down. Wendy's already booking more shows in other venues, and sooner or later someone's going to find a suitable permanent venue again - just be sure the landlord keeps the electricity and plumbing up to code.
I wonder how much drama there would have been if the Cobalt name was just immediately retired after Wendy had her go. But why would it be? It's the name of the building, isn't it? I still see a big sign for the Cobalt Hotel out front, with the same font. Are they gonna be accused of exploiting the name now too?
Let it go. Spilt milk, folks.
None of you cry babies have seen it or been inside... so far it IS the neighbor hood and a lot of ex Cobes too I might add.
The less than one percent of one percent that are bitching about " Ed Hardy bridge and tunnel rejects" should save there pennies and open a new place of there own - hell buy Pub 340 - I gave 917 a chance and went in with an open mind
and ran into some old Cobes buddies, we had mixed feelings but still had a good time. When the do get some hardcore bands are you going to bitch at the bands too?
I am in a band and have been to the Cobes to see many of an awesome live show I hope to see some great shows at 917 too, its close to the neighbor hood and the beer is cheap. Anyways...
HAVING A LIVE MUSIC STAGE IS A GOOD THING IN NOFUNCOUVER THE IGNORANT RANTING ON HERE IS POINTLESS IN THE BIG PICTURE.
Live in the past or build a future for cryin out loud.
With all due respect, and I being a music fan in this city know she deserves a lot, Wendy 13 should have put everything up to code. If she couldn't afford it, tough break.
So far this sounds like a good thing. The supporters of The Cobalt on this comment page come across as whining pussies.
And people are (literally) pissing all over their efforts...why, exactly? Can we all not at least give them the benefit of the doubt by waiting to see just what sort of place 917 Main turns out to be, rather than assuming the worst?
Jesus H. Christ, people...
Glad to see someone is shaping up the city. The Cobalt was a dump of the highest order.
Crappy bands, scummy mohawked "posers" (sic) and losers all gathered together in a venue that looked even more pathetic than when it was a thrid rate peeler bar or when it was a biker douchebag bar...
See, punk rawk bars don't contribute anything because they are a closed system in an economic sense. They simply attract flies...
Broken toilets, wobbly tables, sticky floors, dirty beer lines, cockroaches, fruitlflies, drug addled clientele..yeah..a place where spurious business meets skid row halfway.. RIGHT ON! YOU GO TANK GIRL GO!
And of course the douchenozzlers slamming Ezra and his crew don't realize he has opened other venues that cater to local music/fans, and whether they know it or not is actually spending HIS hard earned money to bring that to life.
The bottom line is money kids. You have to pay bands and put bums in the seats...not Punk rawk unemployed bums that is...
I guess when you hang out all day at the Douchebalt, with no job,no money, no style, no class and no brains and they close it down, it makes you kinda sad.
Well boo hoo for you.
Go and open a bar yourselves and go get a booze license and quit whining..
OH wait..you can't get a booze license... You need to shower up for that, have valid i.d. and some moneh...
Because Punk is cheap, it takes moneh to open a Whiskey..(a-go-go)
Guess it's back to the Cambie for all you revolutionaries...
Cheap beer, an armada of welfare rif raff and white rastas...mmmmmmmm
Viva La Douche-a-lution...
When you have money enough to keep a place open, open a new one or at least pay to get in, you can complain then. otherwise shut it crybablies...

I've ALWAYS wanted to get published in connection with the Straight, and you saved me the trouble by writing this yourself. So thanks! You're a bit off in your impersonation of me though. If I were to GENUINELY post anything here, it probably would have been a bit more vitriolic. (And certainly not class-oriented, something most of these whining pussies seem to be obssessed with).
I LOVE the Internet. It's the place where faceless anonymous cowards can do virtually (arf arf!) anything!
What we lost was the freedom to be, act, exist to an extreme in a bar that is not easily reproduced with another bar, you get kicked out for just looking the wrong way at a bouncer. Whether you like punk or djs you got to appreciate choice and freedom. Ezrah and Drodz are corporate, not community minded, otherwise why would they have destroyed a community. We lost the most extreme place in the city, pretty soon we will all look alike too.
There is no other bar to operate and make a living from as she did with the cobalt. She books shows sure at different bars now, but once a month and it is booking. You make no money from it.
Buying a place like Pub 340 would cost $3.5 million dollars, and to build a space and have it legit, you would have to buy a liquor license at 300k if they decide to give you one. It forces the scene to go underground and the new clubs employ djs over musicians.
The article says "teeth gnashing" like wendy's loss of income and business is just chalked up to feminine hysterics, and there is Patryk saying "east van band" trying to build up street cred.
I BLAME THE CITY! If they didn't make it so damned hard to get a liquor license then none of this would have happened.
I just want to say thanks to Wendy, Chi, and all the great people that I met and that helped me find something and experience music that was off the beat n' path when I was but an ugly and lonely teen. The Java Joint and the Cobalt will always be personally remembered as life changing especially as "progress" makes everything pretty once again. Glad that the Astoria and Funky Winker Beans are still supporting the discarded, ugly and wonderfully talented people. Better than a stick in the eye.
I'm not even a bit surprised by the condescending attitudes of the hipster shitheads supporting the slumlord takeover of the Cobalt. What was once a community will now be turned into a festering hole, covered up with bright lights, shellac, and terrible music. But isn't that what their whole "scene" is based on? Taking (a lot of ecstacy/) someone else's hard work, and "spinning" it to make it look as though they've created something wonderful?
Fuck the Fauxbalt, and fuck the patrons. You're helping something terrible.
you know? so everybody do everybody else a favor and just.....i dunno man. go do something useful. i for one. am going to go restring my bass and bang some fuckin jib...and never brush my hair.....and maybe rob an old lady.
enjoy your new venue there muttonchops

1) why didnt the old tenants sign a new lease?
2) how long did this go on for (no lease)?
as for you hipster yuppie peices of shit; i'd watch your step if i were you. our men actually have meat on them and look like... men! (who would'a thought!)... we also aren't afraid to talk shit in person. if i wasn't 500 km away i would be saying this in front of you right now.
Contrary to the above misconceptions about metalheads, I just so happen to be a well educated (master's degree) professional, and I too loved the punk/metal/hardcore cobalt in all its character. Until it closed Sept 30, 2009, it was always the FIRST place I would choose to go in Vancouver to experience great music, incredible musical talent, and genuine camaraderie and respect. One doorman was all that was needed for "security": all regulars knew the code of conduct and did not disrespect it. I knew I could always walk in there, as a single woman, and hang out with many friends and fellow hardcore/metal music lovers, and NOT have to worry about unwanted disrespectful attention from men (I NEVER go to Granville or 97% of other Vancouver bars for that reason).
Sure, a few other metal-playing venues exist, but they are cold, boring, and do not offer gigs to the up and coming smaller metal (and punk or hardcore) bands that Wendy used to give a chance to (some of which are now touring provincially, nationally and internationally). Wendy also attracted some amazing international bands to the Cobalt, who knew of the bar from their homes in South America, the U.S., and Europe. I saw TONS of shows at the Cobalt that I KNOW I never would have seen anywhere else (especially in Vancouver). It brought the local and international together under one roof, all in the love of live hardcore, metal, and punk music.
So contrary to many of the most recent ignorant comments above, this is NOT about "class"; it's about COMMUNITY. We only need to look around to see how rare a "sense of community" is these days, in whose absence is the presence of many unnecessary conflicts and social problems.
Long live the true Cobalt!!
so some lady by the name of wendy13 couldn't secure her lease so she takes it out 2 guys that could.....I guess calling a slum lord a slum lord doesnt really work when it comes time to negotiate a secure lease ....
Ya the cobalt was great and i always had a good time there, but things change just like...
star fish room
Dick on Dicks
freds up town
purple onion
love-affair
kick rocks
the list goes on.....
and whats up with the facebook hate page???telling people to watch there back...OMFG.....
The people on here telling others to "watch their backs" and in general spreading hate towards "hipsters" don't really get the music.
In all the shit in the world today music should be something that only brings people together.
If this is the type of hate I had coming my way silently when I was at The Cobalt I wish I'd never gone there. Not only did I not dress like 90% of the people there, I have a different skin color. I suppose thanks is in order to you haters for not pounding me because I didn't look anything like you and listen to a variety of music.
Also, if any of you haters want to talk shit to my face about the way I dress or the color of my skin then bring it on. Once you draw first blood you'll be on the floor pretty quick.
Human (not hipster, metalhead, punk or any other lame label defined by anything)
It's your dad.
I guess it's time you two knew about each other.
One's evil and one's slightly less evil.
I really didn't want you to meet this way, on the dirty, pustulant, throbbing, festering internet. It's no place for brothers from different mothers to fight.
I LOVE YOU BOTH! Peace.
It's too bad, it's too bad
Too late, so wrong, so long
It's too bad that we had no time to rewind
Let's walk, let's talk
Let's talk
We (wendythirteen, the Skinny Magazine and more and growing) will be throwing a huge concert in the summer called Hardcore Needs a Home. wendythirteen suggested a collective to start a new place, because it will take more than one person to make it happen. If it was so easy to do why didn't ezra and patryk do it? They couldn't. They couldn't get the liquor license from the tight fisted city that they wanted for the Balmoral so they took the Cobalt over or it was offered to them on a silver platter by el cheapo bastardo Sahota. NOBODY TALKED TO WENDY THIRTEEN during the 60 days to eviction. I think there was a letter from Ezrah but it was too late, but what could be said?..ooops sorry I ate your small slice of pie...BURP!
AND SO Let's leave 917 Main to the DJs.
IF you really care about a new home, and you're in a band and want to play Hardcore Needs a Home, or you want to help: email theskinny@theskinnymag.info. We might have it in a warehouse or outdoors. Got any ideas as to location or a nearby land? Should fit an army. Our goal is to raise money for a more secure place, away from the shady and shitty dealings of Sahota and to raise awareness or paint signs for a massive protest if the city won't make it easier to get a liquor license. Bison started out at the Cobalt by the way and now they are signed to Metal Blade. I guess that happens in DJ land too., good luck 917 Main.
The Skinny Mag is starting to book FUNKY'S 35 W. Hastings, 186 capacity, no crystal chandelier, no pretensions, just cheap beer and live bands (wanna play? email theskinny@theskinnymag.info).
Skinny Upcomings at Funky's: March Friday 16th Hooker Pop, Living Deadbeats, the Electric Demons. / April 9 Haddonfield (from Victoria), Deadcats, Duomatic System / April 23 Motorama, the Gamelons, Joyce Collingwood / May 14 Indian Wars, Student Teacher, Bummer High / May 28 Defektors, La Corde from San Fran, Vapid/ and more more more like Glorywhore, The Furies, Real Problems, Collapsing Opposites, Like Animals Again and more... more dates are opening up for us. Just email us with your idea of a gig and we can put you in a Friday, Sat or Sunday. (xoxo to all bands east side or west side - where the fuck ever - and tswassen!!!)
wendy thirteen has some nights coming up: next one is April 16 and will secure more. But this is not a living, I repeat. She is not running the bar like she did at the Cobalt, so this is temporary.

No room for the little guy.
No room for origionality and brotherhood.
Just faceless, pointless, consumption
At least metalheads consumed together and for the love of our metal home.
917 is garbage, Love live the Cobalt
