Bassekou Kouyate at LiveCity Downtown

Those with any interest in African dance music won’t want to miss Bassekou Kouyate and his band Ngoni Ba at LiveCity’s downtown stage on Sunday (March 14). Kouyate is a Malian grand master of the ngoni, an instrument that’s reckoned to be the great granddaddy of the banjo, and is usually played hard and fast. His debut album, Segu Blue, proved a huge hit in Europe three years ago, and its 2010 follow-up, I Speak Fula, is red-hot. Kouyate’s outfit features four ngoni players who create propulsive, cross-rhythmic grooves with layers of percussion and voices that will take you far away—and all for free.
