Femme Fatale Festivale ladies ready to rock

Last week, Music Notes reported that the grand opening of 560—the new club from the owners of the defunct Richard’s on Richards—is being held on March 26. There is, however, a night of live music booked into the room for Wednesday (March 24), when the Femme Fatale Festivale breaks metal ground in the brand new venue. Promoter Leigh Anne Metcalf put the night together as a way to showcase local metal bands with female members.

“It’s a little harder to be taken seriously if you’re a woman in metal,” Metcalfe told the Straight. “You have to be really good to stand out.”

The night is headlined by Without Mercy, with Unleash the Archers, Scythia, and Eye of Odin filling out the bill. And at least two of the musicians appearing on-stage also happen to be featured in the inaugural 2010 Maidens of Music calendar—another of the industrious Metcalfe’s projects.

“It was actually Chase [Patterson] from the Fury who put the idea to me,” she explained. “She figured I would make it happen, so I did.”

Vocalist Patterson ended up posing for the calendar, along with folk like bassist-vocalist Jessica Jones and Metcalfe herself, joining two of her partners from Indigo Unleashed Entertainment. The Maidens of Music calendar will be available at the show, or you can pick it up at metal-friendly places like Scrape Records (323 East Broadway) and the Loose Moose (724 Nelson Street). All proceeds from the calendar go to BC Children’s Hospital.
