NPA councillor Suzanne Anton calls for permanent Olympic streetcar line

Vancouver’s sole Non-Partisan Association councillor, Suzanne Anton, is calling on the Vision-dominated council to make the Olympic Line a permanent fixture in the city.

The streetcar line—running between Olympic Village Station and Granville Island—was only a demonstration project during the Games period. Mayor Gregor Robertson has said the funding is not there to make it permanent.

“We need to move this train forward,” Anton, a former TransLink board member, said in a March 25 press release.

According to her release, the car carried 500,000 passengers during the Olympics.

At today’s planning and environment committee meeting, council will vote on a motion brought forward by Robertson and Vision councillor Raymond Louie on Olympic legacy opportunities.

It does not recommend saving the Olympic Line.

Anton said she will put forward an alternate motion.

First, we should measure transportation use post Olympics and compare it to prior to Olympics--generally--let's line up our ducks properly.

This doesn't suggest that Vancouver city councillor Anton should wait around--I do think that 'good news' from this comparison could weigh in her ultimate favour, particularly when the people are a little sketchy (post Olympics) about wrapping their heads around another development/transportation matter--so how much post Olympics transportation data should we collect---? At least more than the evidence recently used to suggest an increase in Canada's Bank Rate.

Why not just operate it on Broadway, where it will be really useful.

I really enjoyed the Olympic Line Streetcar. There are plans to extend the line to Science World, Gas Town, Waterfront Station and on to Stanley Park. This would be a dream line for tourists as it would connect almost every Vancouver based tourist attraction along one line aside from the PNE. All that needs to be done on the other side is to extend it to the Planetarium and down Arbutus (Which already has a right of way) and on.

As Vancouver was the monetary support for the demonstration line I expect they are waiting for Translink to state what they would like to have done. However, as we are all aware, Translink is even more cash strapped. Lets hope we see the streetcar line completed soon.

Great idea, if they send it all the way down Arbutus. The West Side residents were up in arms about a Skytrain, but the tram is totally different. It's quiet, low footprint, and fits nicely into the streetscape. It would be perfect for the older residents of Kerrisdale to travel to/from shopping, medical appointments, and just as a means to get out without having to drive.

The additional infrastructure cost of refitting the tracks and installing stations will be negligible compared to Skytrain!

Lots of people took the street car along its short hop from Granville Island to the skytrain station because it was FREE. Only a fraction would have paid a regular transit fare to ride it. So usage data over the past month is grossly inflated.

Anton's primary motivation for keeping the street car is to extend it to the Olympic Village condos and, thereby increase their perceived value by giving the new residents their own private streetcar to Granville Island. Very few other people would use it. Given that doing so would cost another $90 million, this is a poor use of city dollars when they're claiming that they can't even scrape together even a small amount to keep other facilities like the Bloedel Conservatory.

      kick TransLink butt, Suzanne

I'm in favour of anything electric that replaces those stinking diesel buses, especially the stinking and noisy B-Lines on Broadway. How the COV just sits around ignoring TransLink which really needs its ass kicked for operating diesel buses on trolley bus routes, defies comprehension. Suzanne, start kicking some TransLink butt before we kick yours off council!
