No surprise: B.C. Lions name Dennis Skulsky team president

Hardly qualifying as a shocker, the B.C. Lions have named former Canwest Publishing president and CEO Dennis Skulsky as their new president overseeing the business side of the football club.

The move comes just weeks after Skulsky, the former publisher of the Vancouver Sun and Province, resigned his posts with Canwest on March 12 citing a desire to spend more time with his family.

A founding member of the Waterboys—a group of local businessmen who have led the charge for corporate and community support for the football team—Skulsky has been rumoured for months to be the front runner for the top executive position with the Lions who have been without a full-time president since the sudden passing of Bob Ackles in July 2008.

Last fall, Skulsky agreed to co-chair the 2011 Grey Cup Festival when the Canadian Football League's championship game returns to this city. He held that same position the last time the Grey Cup was played here in 2005.

Skulsky becomes the 29th president in B.C. Lions history and begins his new job with the Lions on May 1.
