Marijuana activist Marc Emery to be extradited to United States

The wife of Vancouver pot activist Marc Emery says the decision to extradite her husband to the United States is a “dark scar on our Canadian sovereignty and justice system”.

Jodie Emery told the Straight by phone today (May 10) that Justice Minister Rob Nicholson has approved the extradition of her husband, who for six months had been on bail in Canada for allegedly selling marijuana seeds over the Internet.

In a shaking voice, she expressed worry Marc Emery could face a prison sentence longer than the five years expected from a plea bargain because of two additional counts the justice minister supported.

“Hopefully they don’t proceed with charges on those counts,” she said.

Jodie Emery called on supporters to continue rallying behind her husband.

“Double up your efforts because we’ve got a lot more to fight for now,” she said.

“I’m going to petition relentlessly and make sure that the judge in the United States receives all the messages from now on asking to exercise your discretion and perhaps give Marc a lesser sentence,” she added.

In keeping with the conditions of his bail from the North Fraser Pretrial Centre, the so-called Prince of Pot had surrendered himself to authorities this morning at court in Vancouver.

These charges were only possible because the Canadian government takes no action against US police agencies operating illegally in Canada.
The CBSA allows American police to enter Canada without limitation to conduct mostly covert investigations. There are apparently no restrictions on their activities, they are allowed to carry guns in total violation of Canadian laws and when problems arise, they quickly seek the protection of local police.

just goes to show what a bunch of pussies you Canadians are allowing another nation to dictate to you how to run your country and what to do with your own laws and citizens. Soon we will just annex you chumps and make your country just another of our possessions. I thought there was a bit of courage and morality left in the Americas, you have proven me worng on that one.

      Sorry to be American

I'm a long time pot smoker (more than 35 years), but I do not support Marc Emery's fight to stay out of US jails. Like so many pot politicos, he's made a lot of money out of thumbing his nose at existing laws and treaties with the US. This is not extremism on the US side, nor weakness on ours. We have extradition laws in place. Marc did, admittedly sell seeds to Americans--millions of dollars worth. I lived on Commercial Drive and was a regular patron of the pot-speakeasy known as the "Spirit Within"; and I met the owners of DaKine, across the street before the whole thing went nuts in 2004: the TV cameras moved in, and the line ups went around the block and the cops tried to ignore it till Prime Minister Paul Martin told Gordon Campbell to put an end to it. The Spirit never went public, and we were treated with respect by the cops, who often came in when the smoke was so thick you could ladle it with a spoon. They liked what they saw: no misbehavior, and NO MINORS. DaKine was an example of what happens when it gets out of control. If they'd just fixed the damn ventilation system that fed their smoke into the sushi bar next door, none of the mess would have happened. End result: in comes the DEA and the SWAT teams to bust a middle aged woman, her spouse and a couple of young clerks. But I remember being in the back room, surrounded by huge tubs of pot--and smaller tubs of cash. We're just damn lucky no gangster goons came in with machine guns. I want pot to be legal, yes; but I'd rather it stayed illegal if Big Tobacco (whom I know from direct contact with executives in that industry) should ever get a grip on it. This whole thing is getting blown out of proportion and they'll still be fighting like cats and dogs when California either legalizes it, or it gets tossed out in the coming referendum. Whatever happens to Marc, or any other pot martyr/millionaire, it stays the same for all us heads. I'll still go to work on time, still do my job, still pay my taxes, and still enjoy my dube at the end of the day.
      Lighten up folks.

Half of BC smokes pot and the pot makes them stupid.
And you still want to be bosses of immigrants, who got much higher intelligence and much more experience?
      Be ashamed of yourself!

      unconvenient truth

It is not true, that pot is not addicting.
Smoking a pot = not solving problems in Canada
Smoking a pot = running from the unconvenient
      truth about Canada.
      The truth about Canada:
Everything I have touched in Canada, doesn’t work:
Canadian car makers are the most ineffective in the world.
(That is the fact, GM admitted it)
Your public education system is a disaster,
Your waiting time in medical system is KILLING people (fact)
Your cell network is horrible, 10 years behind Europe
and one of most expensive in the world (fact)
Your phone companies always connect me to employees living in Asia
      Your people are uneducated.
You sell wood to Oregon (USA) and import tables form them,(facts)
because you are not able to make a table.
YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING TO DO.
YOU HAVE ALL MONEY FROM SELLING OIL, METALS, WOOD
