Richard Poplak talks graphic novels at Lucky's Comics

By Brian Lynch,

Toronto-based journalist Richard Poplak will be at Lucky’s Comics (3972 Main Street) from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight (May 13), to talk about his brashly illustrated new book Kenk: A Graphic Portrait (Pop Sandbox, $27.95). On the heels of his travelogue and cross-cultural commentary The Sheikh’s Batmobile, which came out last year, Poplak has turned his hand to the strange but true story of Igor Kenk, the Slovenian-born man whose 2008 arrest marked him as Toronto’s—and arguably the world’s—busiest bicycle thief. Using artist Nick Marinkovich’s gritty black-and-white images, rendered from documentary-film footage taken in the year before the arrest, Kenk tells how the 50-year-old operator of a Queen Street West bicycle shop became the target of a police sting that ended in the seizure of nearly 3,000 bikes. See www.kenk.ca/ for details.
