Asian Heritage Month arrives on-screen

Asian Heritage Month is set to hit local screens with several upcoming events, including the inaugural Indonesian Film Festival, to be held next Saturday and Sunday (May 22 and 23) at the Pacific Cinémathí¨que (1131 Howe Street). Screenings will include two film adaptations of Andrea Hirata’s novels, Laskar Pelangi (The Rainbow Troops) and Sang Pemimpi (The Dreamer ).

Toronto’s Reel Asian International Film Festival is presenting its first cross-Canada tour, Sense of Wonder, at 7 p.m. on May 25 at the Cinémathí¨que, with short films including “Rex vs. Singh” (by John Greyson, Richard Fung, and Ali Kazimi), “Fish in Barrel” (Randall Okita), and “Permute” (Lydia Fu). Okita and Vancouver-based Fu will attend a post-screening discussion. The Vancouver Singapore Film Festival’s presentation of Jean Yeo’s romantic feature The Leap Years, with Yeo in attendance, will follow at 8:45 p.m.

Then there’s the third New Asia Film Festival running May 27 to 30 at the Richmond Cultural Centre (7700 Minoru Gate), with shorts and feature films from Canada, China, India, Japan, Malaysia, and the Philippines and a documentary forum with speakers.
