Pointed Sticks: "Out of Luck/Somebody's Mom", from Dennis Hopper's Out of the Blue

With the recent passing of actor and filmmaker Dennis Hopper, it seems timely to recall his oft-overlooked 1980 movie Out of the Blue, which was shot in Vancouver and featured local punk legends Pointed Sticks.

As seen above, Hopper filmed the band at the Viking Hall on Hastings Street. In an interview with Adrian Mack late last year, Pointed Sticks bassist Tony Bardach recalled meeting the director at the movie's Kitsilano production office. “Nick [Jones] asked him for a script,” Bardach said, “and Hopper says, ”˜There’s no script, man, it’s all in my noggin,’ and he tapped his head.”

Hopper died on May 29 due to complications from prostate cancer.

As someone who encountered Dennis Hopper when he was filming "Out of the Blue" 30 years ago in Vancouver, I'm surprised he made it this far.

As the guy at the film lab running the dailies said one night, "Man, they spill more than they blow."
