The rice burger has come to Vancouver

The rice burger has come to Vancouver! Popularized by Japanese fast-food chain Mos Burger, two flat rounds of lightly grilled sticky rice replace the bun. The homesick Japanese chefs at the new Japas Bistro (552 West Broadway) are offering their version of the classic at lunchtime (11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; open Monday to Saturday), while izakaya fare reigns at dinner. The chewy rice patties sandwich your choice of fried yakiniku beef strips, a teriyaki chicken patty, or a veggie patty; the whole thing is tucked into a paper wrapper for ease of eating. For $7.50, you get the burger, plus fries, salad, and miso soup.

That actually sounds really good. By the description it is a unique sandwich, but unique in the good sense. Not in the heart-stopping way that the KFC Double Down could be considered unique.

"two flat rounds of lightly grilled sticky rice" -- you just know that cannot be healthy. But Canadians like their faux health food so I am quite sure this will be a hit.

This new way to approach burger seems much healthier than using buns. Most of the buns are made with highly processed flour, lots of sugar and butters. I believe rice is a much better choice for healthier meal. Can't wait to try the rice burger myself.
