Split/Second video game like racing in an action film

Split/Second (Disney; PS3, Xbox 360; rated everyone 10+)

Don’t make the mistake of thinking that this racing game is like all the others. This is such an exhilarating experience it had me hyperventilating before I even got out of the tutorial.

The gimmick is that you’re racing in a reality TV show in which the tracks—airports, construction sites, and the like—are designed to explode. You’ll build your power meter by drifting and drafting, and you can then trigger “Power Plays”, like helicopters dropping explosive barrels on your opponents. You—and the other racers—can also change the track mid-race, and can trigger the sudden appearance of shortcuts.

You can race split-screen with a friend, or with up to seven others while connected to the Internet. Winning races earns you credits that access new vehicles and tracks.

With crisp graphics, thundering sound effects, and massive explosions, Split/Second makes you think you are driving—really fast—through a Hollywood action film.
