The Sony media briefing today (June 15) was distinguished by a couple of appearances in particular.

Gabe Newell, cofounder and managing director of venerable game studio Valve, apologized to the assembled at the Shrine Auditorium. In recent years, Newell has been a staunch supporter of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, and proved to have a bit of a hate on for Sony’s PS3.

Newell also thanked Sony reps for not “repeatedly punching me in the face”. He also mentioned that he was introduced to PlayStation spokesmodel Kevin Butler, “head of sharpened objects”. Newell was on hand to announce that Portal 2, the follow-up to the sleeper hit of 2007, will appear on the PS3 when it’s released in 2011.

As for Butler, the comedian and star of the PlayStation television commercials, interrupted the press conference earlier to have some fun at the expense of Microsoft and gamers everywhere. He joked that the best things about games were having a massive TV screen in a one-bedroom apartment and staying up until 3 a.m. to win a trophy that isn’t real.

I know of at least a couple of PS3 owners who are stoked Portal 2 is coming. I just played the first one, and it's awesome, totally unique and absorbing game through and through. i'm glad no one punched Gabe either.
