About 100 protesters took to the streets of Vancouver today (June 26) to show their opposition to the G8 and G20 summits in Ontario.

Chanting slogans like "Fuck the G8! Slam the gate! Fuck the G20! It's blood money!", the protesters carried signs expressing their opinions on issues such as capitalism, climate change, mining, the oil sands, oil tankers, the war in Afghanistan, and water.

The march travelled down Commercial Drive and East Hastings Street to the entrance to Vancouver's port, where it was turned back by two lines of police officers.

While the protest disrupted traffic for a few hours and there was some shoving between activists and police, there were no arrests.

It strikes me how the real "security" for us common folks are the marchers and protesters, while our "leaders" are training the police in the implementation and administration of a police state - at our expense, even.

      malcolm,

The only need for a police state would be to curb a proportionately larger amount of idiots in black masks that wantonly put innocent bystanders at risk. As this is not the case, you must remember that the police you speak negatively of are Canadian citizens just like everyone else, only difference being that they don't want to see broken windows all along a street.

Wish I could have been around to curb stomp a few of these cowardly pricks.

      we have a fascist government

No windows were broken, but if I was to enumerate all the crimes of the politicians and corporations, there wouldn't be enough time in a year. In a democracy, citizens have the right to assemble and express themselves. The fact that there are people like Art and Sheer Logic who don't understand the foundation principles of our society illustrates the failure of our education system, government and popular media.

We have a right to peaceful protest. There is no protected right to protest violenetly. So lets keep it peaceful and reject anyone who proposes violence.

Martin Luther King Jr.and Gandhi showed that peaceful protest works in democratic nations.

Yo Malcolm, The real "security" is there to protect me from a bunch of thugs who think that they have the right to smash and break things because they disagree. It strikes me as absurd that the people who say they want a better way of life for everyone are the ones who destroy. You are what you do, not what you say.

Yeah, Strategis, you are a shining example of our education system. You are so right all the time. Sorry, I can't believe anything by someone who actually thinks 911 was caused by someone other than Osama.
