Surrey Museum offers chance to discuss video-game violence, play historic titles
The Surrey Museum’s From Pong to Pokemon exhibit will feature a lecture by guest curator Ryan Cousineau, as well as a number of “play days” when visitors will have a chance to get hands-on with some of the video-game history on display.
The lecture, "A History of Violence in Video Games", will take place on October 14. Cousineau said he chose the topic because, while the exhibit is intended for a general audience, in a lecture he can show and talk about some of the mature-rated games—Quake, for example—that aren’t suitable for the museum floor. “Video games get singled out for their violence at times,” Cousineau said. “There’s interesting things still to say about how video-game violence is depicted and how it is regarded.”
There will be three days when visitors can play some of the games in the exhibit on the big screen in the Surrey Museum’s lecture theatre. “The Moderns”, featuring titles for consoles ranging from the Nintendo 64 to the PlayStation 3, is scheduled for next Saturday (July 17). September 25 is “8- and 16-Bit Era”, with the likes of the original Nintendo Entertainment System and the Sega Genesis. “Early Days” on November 27 goes further back in time, with the Atari 2600, Intellivision, ColecoVision, and other pioneering consoles.
Space for the lecture and play days is limited. Registration is available at www.surrey.ca.
