Street food vendors selected for new locations in Vancouver

It may soon be easier to grab some schnitzel, dim sum or freshly squeezed lemonade while on the go in Vancouver.

The city wants to bring nutritious and healthy eating options to 17 new locations through a street-vendor pilot program.

Following the submission of around 800 applications, the vendors who will participate were selected today (July 9) by lottery.

“The popularity of this is a clear indication that people want to see a wide range of food on our streets and they want the offerings to reflect the cuisine of our culturally diverse city,” Mayor Gregor Robertson said in a statement.

“Given the amount of interest we’ve had for this initial launch, we’ll definitely be looking at ways to expand food cart operations across Vancouver even more,” he said.

Vancouver Coastal Health will monitor the carts and operators are expected to manage their waste.

Finally, another sign Vancouver is growing up. This is decades overdue.

Nice to see fresh lemonade, but there should be a vendor with an assortment of fruits to juice as well. Maybe next year.

In any case, thank goodness this city council isn't so frigid and scared as most past councils have been.

Making Vancouver street food more than just hot dogs, roasted nuts, and popcorn is long overdue and I've been excited to hear the lottery results. The above list is filled with 16 diverse offerings that sound like a great start to the project. But "lemonade"? Seriously?

did they seriously do this by lottery? (Don't buskers have to audition?) Why not a Food Network reality show where the winners will actually be high quality?

Oh great. That lemonade stand will be below my apartment. Now I'll have the constant smell of lemons drifting through my windows!
