Assassinations of journalists in Honduras a crime against press freedom everywhere

In the last 5 ½ months, or during the beginning of the presidency of Porfirio Lobo in Honduras, there have been at least 9 journalists assassinated in Honduras, and there has been no one brought to justice over these crimes whatsoever. This is part of the ongoing repression of the members of the FNRP or the National Popular Front of Resistance against the coup d’etat, or anyone reporting the truth about the coup and the farcical elections that placed Porfirio Lobo in power. It is an attempt to silence the opposition to the coup and a very serious attack on the freedom of expression which we enjoy in Canada and which needs to be upheld in all countries.

What is happening in Honduras is not permitted to happen without consequences in any other country in the world. Not only that, but Honduras is a country which is friendly with Canada and in which Canada has investments. Also, Canada has many citizens of Honduras living here so it is their right to know what is Canada’s position relative to this situation in Honduras. We, the citizens of Honduras demand an investigation into these crimes that are taking place especially against members of the FNRP. This is not only a crime against journalists in Honduras, but an attack against journalists anywhere in the world and should not be permitted to continue. The perpetrators of these crimes must be brought to justice.

A member of the feminist wing of the National Front of Resistance against the coup d’etat will be coming to Vancouver on August 4-9 this year and will perform on August 7 at the Russian Hall at 600 Campbell Ave. at 7:00 P.M. (doors at 6:00 P.M.). Her name is Karla Lara and she is a well-known singer in Honduras. Other events will be held during her stay here and the phone number for details is 604-264-7310 or 778-829-4464. Karla Lara will have suggestions as to how to oppose the impunity of those who perpetrated these crimes against the Honduras journalists and other members of the Honduras resistance.

your article suggests a conspiracy against journalists who supported Zelaya when in fact a majority of the journalists killed this year were ANTI-Zelaya
