Score: A Hockey Musical to open Toronto International Film Festival

You can't get much more Canadian than this.

The Toronto International Film Festival will open this year on September 9 with Score: A Hockey Musical .

The film will later be released across Canada on October 22.

It's directed by Michael McGowan ( One Week ), was shot in Toronto, and stars Olivia Newton-John (of Grease fame) and singer-songwriter Michael Jordan as parents of a teenage hockey player (Noah Reid) who shoots to stardom overnight.

There are also cameos by a calvacade of Cancon celebrities, including music stars Nelly Furtado, Hawksley Workman, and John McDermott; The Hour 's George Stroumboulopoulos (aka Canada's boyfriend) and journalist Evan Solomon; Wayne Gretsky's father Walter Gretsky, and hockey star Theo Fleury, plus 20 original songs, including contributions from the Barenaked Ladies. (I wonder if there'll be any selections from Anne Murray and Rita McNeil?)

The lighthearted comedy contrasts with other serious Canadian dramas that have previously opened TIFF, such as Paul Gross's Passchendaele and the Holocaust drama Fugitive Pieces .

The release of the film may be particularly good in the wake of the uncommon and jubilant display of Canadian national pride at the Winter Olympics and the winning of the Olympic gold by Team Canada against America in men's ice hockey.
