Supreme Court to deliver ruling in Robert Pickton appeal on Friday
The Supreme Court of Canada will deliver on Friday (July 30) its ruling on whether serial killer Robert Pickton will get a new trial.
In a press release posted on its Web site today (July 27), the country’s top court said that its judgment would be issued at 6:45 a.m. Pacific daylight time.
In 2007, Pickton was found guilty of six counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Sereena Abotsway, Marnie Frey, Andrea Joesbury, Georgina Papin, Mona Wilson, and Brenda Wolfe.
The former Port Coquitlam farmer appealed his conviction on the grounds that the judge in his trial erred when giving instructions to the jury.
Pickton still faces charges in connection with the deaths of 20 other women.
The Crown has reportedly said that, if Pickton’s appeal succeeds, it wants to try him on all 26 counts.
However, if the Supreme Court upholds his conviction, the Crown intends to stay the remaining charges.
