Bicycle journey to support wild salmon in B.C.

By Stephen Thomson,

A month-long bicycle tour is planned to promote wild salmon “sustainability” in B.C.

Organized by a group called the Fraser River Ripple Effect, the Ripple Relay is set for August 1 to 31.

The route starts at Mt. Robson, winding through the Fraser River Basin region before ending in Vancouver.

According to the Fraser River Ripple Effect Web site, the ride organizers hope people “take concrete action based on watershed wisdom to promote the sustainability of salmon stocks for future generations”.

Michelle Nickerson, one of the riders, said the goal is to share information about B.C. wild salmon with people encountered along the way.

Nickerson said the ride is comparable to the Get Out Migration, a walk across Vancouver Island held last spring to oppose open-net fish farming.

“The walk sort of showed how important movement is to getting people together, so this is another attempt at that,” she told the Straight today (July 27) by phone.

The riders also intend to seek support for a private member’s bill to ban open-net fish farming on the West Coast, and fundraise for activities like a 1,400-kilometre swim of the Fraser River planned for summer 2011.
