Supreme Court of Canada dismisses Robert Pickton's appeal for new trial

By Stephen Thomson,

The Supreme Court of Canada has dismissed convicted serial killer Robert Pickton's appeal for a new trial.

Pickton was found guilty in 2007 in the murders of B.C. women Sereena Abotsway, Marnie Frey, Andrea Joesbury, Georgina Papin, Mona Wilson, and Brenda Wolfe.

Pickton had appealed his conviction on six counts of second degree murder arguing the trial judge failed to properly instruct the jury.

But the Supreme Court has dismissed the Port Coquitlam farmer’s appeal and upheld the convictions.

“Certainly, this was a long and difficult trial — but it was also a fair one,” reads the court’s ruling today (July 30).

“Mr. Pickton was entitled to the same measure of justice as any other person in this country,” the ruling continues. “He received it. He is not entitled to more.”

The Crown had reportedly said it will stay charges against Pickton in 20 other murders should Canada’s top court dismiss the appeal.
