Who says the HST court case is about politics?
Chris Delaney is simply wrong about why the Independent Contractors and Businesses Association and five other associations have joined together to ask for a judicial review of the anti–HST petition [“Lekstrom in the clear as HST fight proceeds”, August 5-12].
Delaney told the Georgia Straight: “Them trying to strike it in court suggests to me that there’s a fear that if the petition was to actually go before the legislature, it [HST] would be voted down.”
Our court case has nothing to do with politics or what may or may not happen in the B.C. legislature. What we fear is months and months of uncertainty on this important issue. Our case is about getting clarity on the legality of the petition. A lack of certainty runs the risk of companies putting their investments and hiring plans on hold.
The ICBA represents the small and medium-sized construction operations that are building British Columbia. The people who hire our members to build for them need certainty on what’s going to happen with the HST—and the bottom line on projects.
If Delaney wants to talk about facts, he can pick up the phone and call me anytime. He’s never done that. I’m just not sure he’d want to hear that the HST will help our industry build more buildings, buy more supplies, and put paycheques in the pockets of more working British Columbians.

This challenge is mothing more than helping yourself to a tax break and helping Gordo out of his mess at the same time.
Delaney's comments above are statements of opinion not fact, so there's nothing for him to "get straight". It's you and you henchmen that are trying to bully the people of this province into submitting to your demands that we subsidize your businesses who need to understand this is a political matter and there is no certainty until it is settled to the satisfaction of the people of BC.
time for the real pain and suffering to be inflicted.
Why on earth should the government profit from our children learning how to dance etc. What's more, why should parents be penalized for trying to better their children through the enrichment of arts and sports....
It's obscene that arts and education of our young people is being taxed.
Trying to explain that this tax will benefit us small contractors by saving accounting fees and paying more for everything that was previously pst exempt, gst exempt and everything to do with personal non-business related life tells us you have zero respect for the common man.
I considered joining the ICBA as an electrical contractor and you burned that bridge with enthusiasm by supporting this tax.
New leadership please.
U.S. looks to confront second dip and NW - starts talking about consumption going down --- housing market could hurt -- real estate agents taking a flask with them while golfing -----------and I ask "where is your HST argument now?"------------------Levi and Smyth start talking Google/Internet phoning - after producer gives them 'heads up' about what's coming
