NPA’s Ian Robertson, Peter Ladner rule out Vancouver mayoral runs

By Matthew Burrows,

Ian Robertson isn't planning a run at the mayor's chair in 2011.

Fresh from a summer vacation, Dunbar-based park board commissioner Ian Robertson has ruled himself out as potential Non-Partisan Association mayoral candidate in November 2011.

“The timing’s got to be right, and for me the timing is not right,” Robertson told the Straight by phone.

In May 2009, the Straight speculated that Robertson’s rallying cry to have sailboats removed from Jericho Beach may have been a way to boost his image long-term for a possible run in 2011.

Not so, according to Robertson, who said he’s not in the running right now.

“I have a great job that I like, and at this point in time it’s not something that I would consider,” said Robertson, who’s director of sales at Rocky Mountaineer. “I think what the NPA has to do is to find the very best candidate that we can. At this point in time I am not aware of anyone...the only people I am aware of are the people I have heard speculated in the media.”

Robertson said he has heard 2008 NPA council candidate Michael Geller’s name being floated alongside that of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. CEO Tung Chan, and the NPA’s sole surviving city councillor, Suzanne Anton.

Former two-term NPA city councillor and losing 2008 NPA mayoral candidate Peter Ladner also gave the Straight a flat “No.”

“I’m not planning on it,” Ladner said by phone.

Robertson said the NPA has a pub night scheduled for Wednesday (August 26) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Five Point Pub at 3124 Main Street. The party’s fundraising dinner is scheduled for the third week of October, he added.

I've sent the kids out for snacks and pop -- can't wait.

Too bad. There go a pair of semi decent folk who could have gotten far in removing the bad apple that's in metro municipal office right now.

Whoever succeeds Mayor McSmoothie (tm) is going to be stuck with the whopping bill for his social experiment excesses. Vancouver's budget details are now among the most secretive documents at City Hall. We're in serious danger of ending up like Athens or Los Angeles, and it'll have nothing to do with the Olympics and EVERYTHING to do with this Vision council.

I can't say I envy whoever that is.

I think Gregor is a nice guy, but as a leader, as a mayor, as a politician, he is flaky and a light-weight. That whole debate on chicken coops in backyards is a ridiculous waste of time and money -- not to mention it will barely help the environment. The funding spent on renovating City Hall and Gregor's personal blog are also ridiculous, considering the massive debt. It's time to put some commonsense back into City Hall. If we don't get rid of Gregor, at the very least get rid of the super-majority of council seats that Vision holds.
