Maybe the NPA should make Sam Sullivan its next mayoral candidate

He's never lost an election in the five times his name has been put on the ballot for Vancouver voters.

He has a demonstrated track record in raising oodles of money for his political campaigns.

He has sky-high name recognition, which is one of the most important considerations in municipal politics.

And he can attract votes on the East Side unlike anyone else in the NPA.

Egad. Am I really suggesting that former mayor Sam Sullivan should be the NPA dragon slayer to take on Vision Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson in 2011?

Well, the centre-right Vancouver civic party could do a lot worse.

Sullivan's political career appeared to be toast after he was kneecapped for the 2008 NPA mayoral nomination by his former colleague, Peter Ladner.

But now, the NPA is desperate. And running Sullivan for mayor would create a great deal of media attention, which would help all those NPA candidates who will run for council, park board, and school board.

The media would feast on Sullivan, the perpetual underdog, attempting a political comeback. And Sullivan's candidacy, which would highlight his East Side roots, would diminish public perceptions that the NPA is just a front for the Vancouver Board of Trade and residents of Shaughnessy.

Some in the NPA are trying to get former councillor Tung Chan to head the ticket in 2011.

I'm not sure that Chan, a former banker, is really interested in the job.

Sullivan's extensive efforts to learn Cantonese have endeared him to some in the Chinese community, and might help blunt the efforts of Vision Vancouver to make inroads in this area.

Moreover, Sullivan can give speeches in Punjabi and has learned a fair amount of Tagalog, which is the main language in the Philippines.

Toss in his passable Italian and the NPA has the potential to pick up votes across the East Side with Sullivan as the mayoral candidate.

He would probably still lose the election to Robertson, but his coattails would be long enough to ensure that the NPA wouldn't be obliterated across the board.

And unlike Ladner, Sullivan might be crafty enough to sow some divisions between Vision Vancouver, COPE, and the Greens.

If he were to do that, then the 2011 election would truly be up for grabs.

This isn't the first time someone's suggested Sullivan. Right after the election, I was talking to Ian King, formerly of 24 Hours and Terminal City, and he thought Sullivan could run again.

This is a joke right? After the idiocy of Project Civil City (i.e. Project Criminalize Homelessness), trying to replace InSite with a bogus 'drug replacement therapy', and telling Vancouverites he had better things to do than go to the bargaining table with striking civic workers, why would anyone nominate Sam Sullivan for anything?

And let's not get started on the shadow candidacy of 'James' Green in 2005 or the love Sullivan expressed for stepping on the necks of his opponents in the documentary 'Citizen Sam' - he's easily the biggest wheelchair bound thug since Old Man Potter in 'It's a Wonderful Life'

I am directing the phones to Vancouver --- not Carole - not Sam - Guess Who?

I once heard someone call him marion berry in a wheelchair; maybe unfair but a funny image

What's with all the civic election news articles? The election isn't until next November!

In 2005 Vancouver voters thought they were electing a plucky Rick Hansen type. Instead they got Dr. Strangelove.

LOL
He should definitely run. It would be nice to get away from the bowtied cycling dictator for awhile

He's a wheelchair version of a neo-nazi. Let him rest at the curb. We have two parliaments full of them. We have purge them from office so Sam will have company. Recall in the fall!

Even he is acceptable during these crisis. We urgently need some one to help us get rid of the "Biko Lania" .We may soon see bike lanes even on our roof top.Just miss managent of my tax dollers.Terms like homelessness and unepmloyment are annonymous to the present city managers.

Oh, please...wingnut versus goofball.

Are those the best choices we have for this city!? We will continue to remain "second rate" until we can find men and women of skill and experience across the civic "needs' hierchary. io am ashamed of the "quality" of counsellors that have been fielded by all parties.

Too many dumb-ass Vision hacks today. Let's not toss Sam in and make it a clean sweep.

It's really disgusting to read you leftists making comments about the fact that he's in a wheelchair. So much for political correctness.
