A concrete room plagued by fluorescent lighting made to look fantastic. That’s basically Tokyo Police Club singer-bassist David Monks’s take on the Toronto quintet’s latest music video.
Set to the keyboard-driven jumper “Bambi” and directed by Niel Innes and Nick Turner, the video presents a straightforward jam session splashed in shiny things of every sort. From 2010’s Champ, it was released on YouTube on August 18.
On the phone from Toronto, Monks told the Straight that he and his partners in crime—guitarist Josh Hook, keyboardist Graham Wright, and drummer Greg Alsop—can take little credit for this one.
“We actually shot it in one afternoon, in like three hours,” Monks explains. “I just stood there and sang “Bambi” like 50 times. And then the dudes with the cameras made it look wicked.”
He went on to recall that the band flew into London jet lagged and sleep-deprived, proceeded to a rehearsal space where the shoot was taking place, and did what they had to do.
“With the “Wait Up” video, I was really involved with that,” he continued. “But on this one, I was just like, ”˜Oh my god, I can’t even stay awake.’”
On the video’s conceptual simplicity—relative to, for example, “Wait Up”’s scenes of dogs throwing a pool party the second mom and dad are out of the house—Monks gave credit to his directors.
Obviously stoked on the final product, he added, “We were trying to make, I guess, something that was just a vehicle for the sound to get out there more.”
