No Fun City documentary is a global phenomenon
Vancouver is exporting No Fun to the U.K. On October 8, the documentary No Fun City premieres in England at the Prince Charles Cinema in London’s West End. Codirector Melissa James told the Straight that venue woes, red tape, and gentrification appear to be a global phenomenon.
“Maximum RocknRoll put the trailer up as their video of the week in July, and we started to get all these e-mails from New Zealand, Australia, England—random places that you wouldn’t even believe,” she said. “And everyone was identifying with us and saying, ”˜We have the same issues.’ ”
The movie is also travelling across Canada, and James hopes to be there when it screens at Pop Montreal at the end of September. A fundraiser at the Rickshaw Theatre on Saturday (September 4) will help with the costs of sending No Fun City on tour, with a screening followed by sets from Vapid, Defektors, Twin Crystals, the Furies, and some “special secret guests”.
