Suzanne Anton mulls, Michael Geller rules out mayoral run

By Matthew Burrows,

The Non-Partisan Association’s lone city councillor, Suzanne Anton, hasn't ruled out a run for mayor.

The Non-Partisan Association’s lone city councillor told the Straight she doesn’t have to decide “for another six months or so” if she’ll run as the party’s mayoral candidate in November 2011.

“Obviously, I am not going to pretend I am not a possibility; obviously, I am,” Coun. Suzanne Anton said by phone from Oslo, Norway, where she was on holiday.

Anton, a two-term councillor and former one-term park-board commissioner, placed eighth in the 2008 election, winning one of 10 council seats. She topped the polls in 2005.

To say she is considering running for mayor is “overstating it”, according to Anton, who said her goal is to “get the best candidate possible” to lead the NPA.

“That could easily be someone else altogether,” she added. “No, I am not going to name names.”

In 2008, city council candidate Michael Geller placed 12th, the highest-placing NPA candidate besides Anton.

“I’m not running for mayor,” Geller told the Straight by phone. “It is interesting, though, that a number of people have asked me. I’m flattered and surprised, though it could be a testament to the depths of my stupidity.”

Geller said Anton is the “leading candidate” to run, given her experience, but he suggested that she “needs to decide soon if she wants to do it or not”. Geller noted that Anton, as a mayoral candidate, would stand to lose her council seat if she failed to beat Gregor Robertson, whom Geller described as “an attractive, pleasant young man”.

The Straight previously reported that former two-term city councillor and 2008 NPA mayoral candidate Peter Ladner, two-term NPA park commissioner Ian Robertson, former NPA councillor Kim Capri, and former NPA mayor Sam Sullivan have ruled themselves out of the running.

“I hope Sam’s political career is not finished,” Anton stated. “Kim [Capri] and I were very big supporters of Sam.”
