Three new food carts out this week in downtown Vancouver

Licious Living's new food stall offers sandwiches, salads, and vegan options on Granville Street and Dunsmuir.

In a 15-minute walk downtown yesterday, I ran across not one, not two, but three new food stalls. Golly gee! I was on my way to dinner, yet I could have had a whole three-course meal before I arrived. Now I can rest assured that I’ll never go hungry on the way to my next meal.

Here’s what I found.

Licious Living

Southwest corner of Granville and Dunsmuir Streets

Open Mondays to Fridays, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

604-685-7054

This “Mobilicious” street cart is an offshoot of the Licious Living retail outlets. It started operation on September 2. Its menu, which you can peruse on-line, focuses on healthy offerings such as salads, sandwiches, and wraps ($5.98 to $8.93).

When the weather gets colder, they’ll be offering entrées that you can pick up and reheat at home or the office. These include veggie lasagna and Thai chicken coconut curry ($5.80 to $8.93). You can currently order these items in advance by calling 604-685-7054 for pick-up at the street stall.

Mobilicious even has breakfast covered, with options like almond-milk fruit smoothies ($5.09) and breakfast burritos ($5.80).

This cart caters to vegetarians with meat- and dairy-free options clearly marked, as well as gluten-free options such as banana chocolate chip cookies ($2.50).

Poke ’m

Northwest corner of Robson and Hornby Streets, across from MAC cosmetics

Open every day, 11:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.

This lime-green stall is run by the cheerful trio of Vicky Tran, Hua Tran, and Albert Ng. It opened September 4.

The playful name, Poke ’m, refers to the sticks that skewer the grilled meatballs they serve. “Forget sausages. Go for the balls!” a hand-written sign proclaims.

First, choose your meatballs: chicken, beef, fish, fish tofu, fish fritters, or cuttlefish. Then, choose your sauce: Japanese, Caribbean, Korean, Vietnamese, or traditional curry fishball sauce. The proprietors will grill your combo on the spanking new barbecue.

Each skewer of three to four balls costs $3.75.

Kimono Koi Crepes

Southwest corner of Granville and Georgia Streets (near the Canada Line station)

Open every day, 11 a.m. to 8 or 9 p.m. Hours will eventually extend 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays and Sundays; 9 a.m. to 2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays

This bubble-gum pink crepe stand is so cute that it looks like it was flown in straight from Japan. It opened on September 5. Owner Chris Lee cooks up a range of Japanese-style crepes, from sweet to savoury to cold and filled with ice-cream.

Sweet crepes run from $5 to $9.99 each and include fillings like Cheddar and chocolate syrup, and strawberries and brownies.

Savoury crepes run $6.75 to $9.99 and feature combos like tuna and egg.

Ice cream versions include very Japanese ingredients such as red-bean paste and green tea ice cream.

Each order comes wrapped up all prettily too, in true Japanese fashion.
