Guided walks to highlight Vancouver’s “lost streams”

Dozens of salmon-bearing waterways that once criss-crossed what is now Vancouver may have disappeared over the past 150 years, but they haven’t been forgotten.

Coinciding with Wild Salmon Month in the city, the third annual Lost Streams and History Walks, organized by the False Creek Watershed Society, take place from September 11 to October 17.

Participants in the series of guided tours and talks will be encouraged to imagine what the natural landscape once looked like before it was cleared and settled, society founder Celia Brauer explained.

Brauer suggested it is important to foster appreciation for pockets of wilderness that have escaped destruction from urban development.

“I think it’s important to remember the history in order to not repeat the poor habits we’ve had for the last century,” Brauer told the Straight by phone.
