Upcoming Jackass 3D brings back memories of poolside partying with a naked wee man

The Georgia Straight's movies editor, Craig Takeuchi, just handed me a pass to the advance screening of Jackass 3D next week, and now all I can think about is how cool it was hanging out with those zany Jackass stunt freaks in Hollywood a few years back.

It was late August or early September of 2006, and on the flight to L.A. I befriended the guy next to me, Scot, who's part of the Jeff O'Neil morning radio show on CFOX. Me and "Scotty" shared drinks on the plane and a cab to the Roosevelt Hotel, located right in the center of Hollywood, where I'd never been before. What we encountered at the hotel was a pool party with most of the cast members of the soon-to-be-released Jackass Number Two in attendance (except skateboard great Bam Margera, who apparently had a good reason not to be there). There was a margarita station operated by a bartender who refused to skimp on the tequila. The good times started rolling when Jason "Wee Man" Acuna stripped down and hopped in the pool because Johnny Knoxville mentioned it as a possibility.

Taking that as a cue to join in the festivities, I made way too many visits to Mr. Margarita, and by the time of the screening across the street at Grauman's Chinese Theatre I was dangerously close to the type of projectile vomiting the Jackass guys just love to feature in their films. But I kept it together, got through the movie—which was hilarious, by the way— and then made it back to the hotel, where I tried to talk Scotty into going to see Can-Am guitar hero Pat Travers at a club on the corner of Hollywood & Vine.

Scotty wasn't into it—some hardcore rocker he is—so I went by myself, and it was an awesome show. With a killer band, Travers worked through such late-'70s/early-'80s gems as "Stevie", "Crash and Burn", and "Snortin' Whiskey". The margarita buzz held right through to the end, way after midnight, and was still there in the morning when it was time to do roundtable interviews with the Jackass Number Two stars.

After getting the scoop from the incredibly nice Johnny Knoxville I did the obligatory tourist stroll down Hollywood Boulevard and then it was time to depart Tinseltown, never to return again. I never did return again because the invite for the Jackass 3D press party must have gotten lost in the mail.
