Parallels explore new worlds
Without sounding overly dramatic, Parallels organist Jarrod O’Dell admits that the announcement of the group’s final gig, which takes place this Saturday (October 23) at Pat’s Pub, has been a long time coming. Between guitarist Mike Flintoff’s work with the Tranzmitors, bassist Tyler Mounteney’s electro project Lust, drummer Mike McDiarmid’s Red Hot Icicles Burning on Fire, and O’Dell’s stints spinning soul records around town, the long-running garage combo has fallen by the wayside. “This isn’t the thing that’s carrying us anymore,” O’Dell told the Straight. “These other projects are.”
While there’s nothing pulling the Parallels apart other than a change in tastes, it does end a partnership between the four that began early last decade with their ska band the Hoodwinks. But as sure as the Hoodwinks morphed into the mod sounds of the Parallels, each member’s new venture represents his influences at the moment. They’ll remain drinking buddies, though. “We were never the most ambitious band,” O’Dell admitted. “Maybe we like hanging out, drinking beers, and talking garbage more than we’re invested in playing this material.”
